DOWL Structural Engineer - Senior Level in Helena, Montana
The Senior Structural Project Engineer 1 is responsible for leading the structural design and analysis efforts on a variety of engineering projects. The person in this position must be a licensed engineer to practice Structural engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire. The person in this position must be able to quickly learn and apply other design codes as necessary to meet project objectives. The person in this position will lead Structural engineering efforts on highly complex projects and will be a contributing expert to the advancement of the field of Structural engineering. The person in this position will provide leadership and guidance to less experienced team members, and senior level review and oversight on a variety of simple to complex projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Perform Structural engineering related calculations, analysis, and design tasks
Independently complete highly complex engineering projects.
Independently write technical specifications, reports, and other correspondence to a variety of audiences.
Lead the design efforts in the role of engineer-of-record on a variety of project types.
Perform independent checking and senior review of the design work of other team members.
Efficiently work with drafters to assemble complete and accurate engineering plans
Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.
Provide design oversight.
Expertly employ a variety of design codes related to the industry.
Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals.
Work with one or more industry groups to advance the field of structural engineering.
Demonstrate Structural engineering expertise by presenting projects or writing papers for industry associations as directed.
Demonstrate a strong ability to meet project budgets and schedules.
Consistently exercise discretion and judgment in all work tasks.
Learn and apply company standards and best practice.
Follows DOWL’s safety program and maintain a safe work environment at the office and in the field.
Follows DOWL’s Operational Excellence program to maintain a high standard for deliverables and engineering calculations.

Supervises a team of Structural Engineers (from intern to level 5) in the Structural Engineering Department. Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in engineering (civil, structural) from an accredited university and 10 years’ progressive experience or a Master’s degree in civil engineering (civil, structural) and 9 years’ progressive experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
SE Required: This position is for a licensed engineer to practice structural engineering in the state of primary practice or should be licensed in a different state with the ability to get the required license within 6 months of hire.
Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Project software.
Strong understanding of structural behavior and mechanics of materials.
Strong understanding of structural engineering design and analysis principles.
Accurately complete engineering calculations for all major material types including concrete, steel, timber, and/or masonry.
AutoCAD and/or MicroStation knowledge and experience is highly desirable.
Advanced level proficiency with MathCAD.
Advanced level proficiency with one or more of the following structural analysis programs: SAP2000, Risa3D, Midas, or GTStrudl.
Advanced understanding of seismic design principles and non-linear analysis techniques.
Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.
Sought after as an expert in the field of Structural engineering.
Exceptional technical and communication skills.
Strong organization skills.
