Work with us and help increase access to the outdoors for everyone. Our health, our planet, and our collective future rely on diversity – in thought, ability, experience, and ideas. That’s why we need YOU. Become a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) intern and help make the outdoors more accessible for all!

Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail YES Intern:

Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. YES interns focus on barriers to entry for individuals with disabilities in the outdoor work and recreation spaces. Stewards, in partnership with the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail, are seeking a YES intern who will actively participate in providing a voice for people with disabilities by being a team member in creating an event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights March and the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights March is in 2025, as well as the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The 1960s Civil Rights Movement had significant impact on politics and culture in the United States and laid the groundwork for the Disability Rights Movement that began in the 1970s. Our goal of the 60th anniversary of these marches is to recognize those people with disabilities and connect it with Jim Letherer, who participated in the Voting Rights March in 1965 on crutches after being invited to participate by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There will be a celebration and remembrance event on the Edmund Pettus Bridge which is iconic to the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama. The event will include educational components that will highlight people with disabilities.

The intern will be a member of the interpretive staff and will be immersed in the history of the civil rights movement and will go on field trips to visit the sites that are significant to this time in history. They will review our interpretive centers and programs to ensure that areas are accessible to all and will be a member of the resource team in the planning for the event to be held in Selma. The expectation is that an event will be planned in which many people with disabilities will participate, including a "march" across the Edmund Pettus Bridge which will be once in a lifetime event.

Duties Include:

· Attend orientations and trainings to learn about various aspects of the Civil Rights Movement

· Complete trainings for interpretive programming (trainings will be provided)
