Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Campus Police Officer / AS1013P in Hattiesburg, Mississippi

This Position is for a Chief of Campus Police - Harrison County Campus with a public university located in Gulfport, MS.

Job Description: The Chief of Campus Police and Safety functions as a uniformed working supervisor and performs regular shift work as well as leading and supervising all aspects and operations of the Campus Police and Safety Department. The Chief of Campus Police and Safety reports directly to the Dean of Business Services on the Harrison County Campus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

General Duties: Supervise and coordinate campus police enforcement of College policies, campus rules, and regulations, and laws of the State of Mississippi. Coordinate and conduct investigations of campus incidents. Responsible for campus police response to campus emergencies. Responsible for maintaining positive public relations between campus police, the campus community and the local community. Responsible for maintaining proper communication between campus police and the college community. Responsible for providing training and development for campus officers. Responsible for assisting college employees in providing safety/security programming for students and College personnel. Responsible for maintaining communication and good working relationship with local law enforcement agencies, court personnel, District Attorney's office and other emergency response agencies. Responsible for campus police department inventory. Responsible for campus police department budget accounts, payroll documents and scheduling. Responsible for case logs, assignment of case numbers and case files. Responsible for preparing quarterly campus crime reports. Responsible for maintenance of ARMS database for the campus. Responsible for maintaining a positive working relationship with all departments on campus. Responsible for the campus video camera security system.

Specific Duties: Schedule officers for regular duty, campus activities, i.e., registration, sporting events, homecoming, etc., and arrange coverage of shifts when regularly scheduled officers call-in sick, have family emergencies, etc. Complete and submit time records for department personnel. Complete and submit purchase requisitions for supplies and equipment. Arrange for maintenance of police vehicles. Lead and manage all threat assessments which require police detail. Supervise the enforcement and processing of violations of College policies, campus rules and regulations and State laws by campus police officers. Coordinate campus mail pick-up/delivery and bank deposits. Conduct annual inventory of campus security equipment. Report security/safety concerns to appropriate personnel. Coordinate the reporting of student violations to the Dean of Student Services. Responsible for the maintenance of all evidence by current statutory and court approved evidentiary standards. Coordinate and compile monthly drills and reporting to the appropriate administrators and committees. Serve as an active member of the Safety and Emergency Management Team. Ensure appropriate procedures are used by campus police officers when enforcing and processing violations. Ensure that all police officers perform the following: Complete and submit all required logs and forms; Report safety hazards and unsecured conditions found on campus; Perform public relations tasks such as giving directions to visitors, etc.; Cooperate and assist maintenance personnel; Lock and unlock doors as required; Turn on and off campus lighting; Pick-up/delivery of campus mail and deposits; Assist in the supervision of students at appropriate activities; Monitor and enforce traffic/parking regulations; Notify the Dean of Business Services and other appropriate personnel of serious incidents/emergencies and follow appropriate procedures; Prepare all required reports, evidence and other related materials for judicial hearings and criminal court; Maintain good working relationships with local law enforcement and emergency response gencies; Follow proper flag etiquette and raise and lower all campus flags in accordance. Perform unannounced inspections of campus police operations. Monitor security camera systems. Report security personnel and operational problems to the Dean of Business Services. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Business Services or Campus Vice President.

Education and Experience:

Mandatory: Minimum of Associate's Degree with eight years' experience as a certified police officer or Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning with five years' of experience as a certified police officer. Graduate of an accredited police academy. Currently Certified police officer. Minimum of five years' supervisory experience in law enforcement or related security position. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Internet. Familiarity and understanding of community policing Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience presenting to groups.

Desirable: Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. Police or security experience is a community college or education setting. Certification in National Incident Management Systems (NIMS). Demonstrated law enforcement investigative experience.
