Job Description Summary

As Director, BI Underwriting (UW) Analytics you will be responsible for interpreting data and turning it into information to support Business Insurance (BI) Underwriting initiatives. You will utilize data and analytics to strengthen the BI Underwriting Rules and Quality Review Programs by providing oversight of the increased underwriting automation and other rules driving countrywide underwriting, industry and portfolio results. You will also leverage internal and external information to identify quantifiable and actionable opportunities to advance underwriting quality assessments and the efficacy of underwriting model execution.
The Director, BI Underwriting Analytics is additionally responsible for conducting analyses of business data and trends, reporting on and the monitoring of key underwriting performance metrics, and the communication of these results to various audiences. Lastly, the position holder is expected to partner on strategic initiatives to ensure optimal outcomes, including the identification of opportunities and recommendations to improve underwriting results, expand portfolio management capabilities, optimize underwriting model determination and underwriting automation outcomes, and improve underwriting execution, rules management and portfolio controls.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities
Partner to design and develop tools, analysis techniques and monitoring processes to improve the scale and scope of automated underwriting, rule management and portfolio analytic capabilities; including underwriting architecture efficacy and consistency.
Spearhead the development of automated solutions and strategic analytic tools to support a portfolio-based quality review of various Underwriting and Compliance attributes and standards.
Aid in developing the BI UW Quality Review Analytics & Rule Monitoring Framework.
Identify opportunities to improve and implement strategic data tools, quality analytics as well as both repeatable and ad hoc management reports.
Perform and/or direct the completion of reasonability and validation tests with direction. Collaborate with Information Management & Analytics (IM&A) and/or related IT teams on information needs, including data availability and data accuracy.
Evaluate and synthesize information from rule execution to assess strategy effectiveness, identify strategy enhancement opportunities, predict trends and recommend and influences strategy/rule changes to improve business performance, underwriter execution and agent experience.
Develop improved effective automated rules analysis, monitoring & testing procedures. Develop and perform pre-analytics and scenario modeling evaluations to forecast and monitor the accuracy and effectiveness of rule logic development and/or logic change accuracy.
Oversee and ensure the effective execution of Test & Learns to inform business strategies.
Monitor performance as well as underwriting, routing and other types of rules used to execute our underwriting strategies and implement possible improvements.
Leverage data visualization and communication skills to effectively showcase analyses, trends and insights to influence leadership regarding decisions/outcomes.
Play an active role in our approach to Rule Architecture, ensuring strategy to rule alignment, and incorporating business needs for AE workload management, customer experience implications and business results.
Influences underwriting and business strategies to leadership to prioritize investments based on translation of insights to business value, within Select and across Business Insurance UW, BCO, Business Insurance Markets and other functional areas.
Act as liaison between business and IT to ensure delivery and execution of underwriting, rule, question and user experience strategies via automation platforms/channels.
Bachelor’s degree required.
4 years’ experience in analytics, business insurance, or related experience required.
Education, Work Experience, & Knowledge
Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, finance, computer science, statistics, MIS preferred.
6 years’ experience in analytics, business insurance, or related experience preferred.
4 years’ experience successfully working with Microsoft Office products or similar products preferred.

Thorough knowledge of business insurance concepts.
Thorough knowledge of underwriting, risk evaluation and insurance products.
Working knowledge of Descriptive Analytic practices and processes.
Thorough knowledge of Excel capabilities (pivot tables, macros, compound formulas).
Working knowledge of QlikView.
