The Privacy Office's mission is to go beyond baseline compliance to focus on centralizing and prioritizing the safeguarding of personal information entrusted to us by our customers and employees. Aligned with Cengage's mission to improve lives through education, we have established strategic goals centered around privacy risk management, privacy awareness and engagement, and achieving operational excellence, among others.
In close collaboration with the Sr. Privacy Counsel, the Privacy Program Manager will have the opportunity to help build and lead a world-class, global privacy program. This position offers the opportunity to work across functions, integrating privacy into our business practices and taking charge of daily operational duties. We seek a proactive, driven individual with outstanding communication skills, a strong passion for privacy and education, and a talent for assisting teams in implementing privacy requirements effectively.
What you'll do here:
Collaborate with the Senior Privacy Counsel to provide strategic privacy guidance and support to colleagues across all functions and business units.
Proactively identify and assess potential privacy risks, and effectively manage response, remediation, and escalation.
Establish and maintain a structured framework for tracking, reporting, and driving key privacy initiatives.
Work closely with Legal Operations on the day-to-day operations of the privacy program, as well as specialized privacy projects as required.
Take the lead on the cookie compliance program.
Conduct privacy reviews of new and existing vendors as part of Cengage’s third-party risk management program.
Assist with data mapping, including by conducting informational interviews and creating and maintaining records in our privacy platform.
Spearhead the improvement of processes and procedures for addressing data subject requests, such as access, deletion, correction, and portability.
Develop, maintain, and enhance privacy-oriented documentation to meet evolving regulatory requirements and uphold the highest privacy program standards.
Conduct privacy impact assessments of programs, systems, products, and services.
Monitor the privacy inbox, triage incoming matters, and track them from intake to completion.
Promote a culture of privacy awareness by assisting with the implementation, management, and enhancement of the company's privacy awareness and training program.
Stay current with privacy regulatory trends and industry standards.
Skills you will need here:
Minimum of 8 years of experience in privacy-related work, preferably with experience in building privacy programs
Strong understanding of domestic and global privacy laws
Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex privacy concepts in a way that empowers non-expert audiences with actionable insights.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to construct clear and concise analyses and interact with leaders across the business.
Skilled in building strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels.
Demonstrated problem-solving approach that is practical and collaborative, with the ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgment.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance and effectively prioritize short and long-term project deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
Experience working with technology companies, particularly in the edtech and/or education sectors
CIPP or CIPM or another relevant privacy certification
Experience working with a Privacy Management Platform (e.g., OneTrust, TrustArc, etc.)
Firm grasp of FERPA, COPPA, and student privacy regimes is a plus.

The full base pay range has been provided for this position. Individual base pay will vary based on work schedule, qualifications, experience, internal equity, and geographic location. Sales roles often incorporate a significant incentive compensation program beyond this base pay range.
$101,900.00 - $163,000.00 USD
