POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Chaplain will be open and willing to work with people of all backgrounds listed above and any other backgrounds not listed within the execution of this role.

The Associate Chaplain will report to the Dean of Religious Life/Chaplain and be a part of the Center for Religion, Spirituality and Social Justice ( CRSSJ ) team. This team is an office under the Division of Student Affairs. We serve the entire campus providing spiritual, emotional, and communal support in a multi-faith capacity. Other members of the CRSSJ team include the Muslim Prayer Leader (part-time), the Associate Director of First-Generation & Low-Income Student Programs, and our Administrative Assistant. The primary duties of the Associate Chaplain position include providing religious services and offerings on campus aligned with the Associate Chaplain’s faith tradition, providing pastoral counseling, supporting interfaith work on campus, supporting religious/spiritual student organizations, working with on-campus partners to create an inclusive environment on campus, supporting the Grinnell Advocates (peer-led sexual violence support hotline), and being a positive presence on campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for preparation of religious services and offerings

  • Counseling students, faculty, and staff

  • Supporting Religious/Spiritual Student Organizations

  • Facilitating interfaith work on campus

  • Relationship building both on and off campus

  • Supporting the Grinnell Advocates (peer-led sexual violence support hotline)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Masters in Divinity or completion of a seminary program

  • Five years or more relevant work experience

  • Any and all faith backgrounds are encouraged to apply

  • Abide by ethics codes received through training and/or through ministerial related professional associations

  • Proactive Presence: This person should be committed to building relationships with students, staff, and faculty across campus.

  • Thoughtful and Aware Presence: This person should be committed to respectful, honest, and compassionate multi-faith work.

  • Open-minded Presence: This person should be able to support people from varied faith or non-faith perspectives. While holding their own religious identity with integrity and honesty, this person must be open and willing to work with people who think differently than them.

  • Inclusive Presence: This person should be committed to building an inclusive and welcoming community for all students; understanding that for some religious communities have been a place of harm, the Associate Chaplain should interact with students with sensitivity and understanding of this reality.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within a higher education setting

  • Experience working in multi-faith communities and/or interfaith work
