What you will do

As a Senior Thermal Hardware Design Engineer, you will work in the Powertrain Installation team supporting Diesel, Natural Gas, and Battery Electric Truck Programs. You will act as the Component Team Leader providing expertise in Powertrain Installation, leading the development, design, and implementation of thermal management solutions for Volvo Group. Highlights of this position includes developing and leading thermal hardware, designs, and validation, as well as the integration of theme to the Truck’s Chassis and Powertrain. You will work side-by-side with design, purchasing, simulation, testing, validation, manufacturing, and aftermarket stakeholders to provide the best design solution in terms of quality, mass, function, and cost. But also responsible for factory, field issues, and aftermarket quality improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and coaching your peer Engineers as the component lead

  • Supporting your team in technical discussions to make the right technical choices.

  • Design ownership of components from cradle to grave

  • Lead continuous improvement activities (process, tools, methods) and fostering innovation for Quality, Mass, and Cost initiatives.

  • Coordinate activities and requirements amongst Design and Application Center to develop a balanced and functional thermal management system.

  • Ensure the successful delivery of high-quality products, primarily heat exchangers, fluid lines, fans, shrouds, and any mounting and shielding necessary to guarantee thermal system balance and efficiency.

  • Problem solve and determine best methods to validate designs.

  • Document best practices and create know-how manuals.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks using analytical and critical thinking skills.

Your future team

Our team, Powertrain Installation, is responsible for the integration of the powertrain into the Chassis for trucks developed for North America. This includes the complete thermals and cooling system, coolant transport, heat exchangers, for both ICE’s and Electric Powertrains. Thermal Systems in Powertrain Installation is a challenging area that works with many areas of the vehicle to ensure thermal targets are being achieved. This includes Chassis Components, Electrical, CAB, Engine, and Transmission

Who are you?

You are an experienced engineer who has technical leadership experience developing complex thermal systems & functions. You enjoy working in a collaborative, energetic, and global environment. A proven ability to lead cross-functional and cross-site product development activities is an excellent asset for you in this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Master's Degree preferred

  • 5-8+ years of related professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer.

  • Deep understanding physics principles for heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics for EV systems.

  • 5+ years experience in thermal systems engineering, preferably in the EV automotive or Trucking Industry related to hardware design, release and trouble shooting.

  • Demonstrated experience in setting up new and innovative process and/or methodologies.

  • Expertise in design documentation and strong product data management experience

  • Advanced CAD (PTC CREO preferred) experience.

  • Working understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.

  • Ability to read, interpret and generate engineering documents like, drawings including and technical specifications like, Test and Validation Procedures / design’s best practices.
