Associate Engineer - Geometry Assurance

What you will do

This position provides an opportunity to solve real world engineering problems involving geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing of vehicle parts and systems. The candidate for this position will provide design support, solutions, and strategies through a cross functional network of people and processes in a fast-paced environment. Candidate will coordinate and perform complex engineering tasks under minimal supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide geometry assurance support within a specific area and reporting status and results to respective teams.

  • Follow up on results from master builds, manufacturing, and manufacturer in accordance to the Dimension Control Plan (DCP).

  • Analyze fault reasons and provide feedback to responsible engineers, quality engineers, and manufacturing.

  • Work cross functionally to set up geometrical tolerance requirements on vehicle geometries and relationships to ensure quality impression and manufacturing feasibility targets are met.

  • Reconcile gap & flush requirements and compare with actual vehicle build conditions.

  • Initiate and support with the creation of Interface Systems Drawings (IS) and Assembly Requirement Drawings (ARD) in coordination with manufacturing stakeholders.

  • Define datum targets and the size of tolerances in consultation with design engineers and manufacturing.

  • Create part measuring strategies, including the data points needed and support for creation of inspection fixtures.

  • Carry out measuring preparations, deciding on measurement methods and measurement tools based on end requirements (in consultation with manufacturing).

  • Support the plant and other teams with any open issues in the current production vehicles.

Our team, Cab Engineering, is part of Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT), a division of Volvo Group North America. Cab Engineering North America has the responsibility for delivering Cab Projects, Cab Architecture solutions, and Cab Features for the Mack Truck and Volvo Truck brands. We develop new and advanced cab solutions for our future trucks while continually adapting our current products to new and different market and customer demands. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

  • 0-3+ years of related engineering experience

  • Solid understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing philosophy and applications

  • Firm understanding of tolerance stack-up analysis

  • Experience with use of computer-aided tolerancing tools (RD&T, VSA, 3DCS, etc.)

  • Understanding of robust design methodology

  • Some level of experience with tooling and part checking/inspection fixtures

  • Competence in a CAD system is beneficial
