North Carolina Agriculture & Technical State Unive Assistant Director, Residential Experience in Greensboro, North Carolina

The Assistant Director of Residential Experience position reports directly to the Associate Director of Residential Experience. As a distinctive member of Residential Experience, the Assistant Directors support the educational work achieved in the residence halls by serving as an advisor and leader of Residence Hall Directors by supporting and assisting in residential and university engagement, facility management, operational needs, student staff, and student conduct. The Assistant Director is responsible for residential communities including the supervision of 4 to 6 Residence Hall Directors and about 2,000 residential students. Assistant Director will assist with hiring of resident assistants, serving on housing committees, student development, and training for student leaders in the undergraduate residence halls. In addition, the Assistant Directors function in a tiered, emergency on-call rotation.

Staff members ensure student safety and provide students with adequate experiences at the university. Provides leadership in promoting an atmosphere within the residential community that supports academic achievement and fosters responsible decision-making. Coordinates community and student development through social and educational programming. Provides advice and counsel for individual students, student leaders, and student groups. Serves on departmental and campus-wide committees. Staff is required to engage residents, be visible within the campus community, attend meetings and events regularly, and be able to respond to emergencies within their community.

In addition, the position is responsible for professional development, professional actions, and effective communication with students, parents, staff, faculty, and members of the campus community.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The primary purpose of the Housing and Residence Life department is to provide housing accommodations and a certain quality of life for over 5,900 residential students. To provide living accommodations which are clean, safe, healthy, and comfortable while enhancing the quality of life, which supports the academic mission of North Carolina A&T State University. The Residential Experience program is designed to provide an environment which supports students in their academic pursuits, encourages interpersonal development, and offers opportunities for individual growth and challenge. To provide a quality of life for on campus students through a clean, safe, educational environment. Responsible for the overall leadership and management of all residence halls, the assignments of rooms, occupancy status of halls, housekeeping needs, maintenance concerns, and budgets, including operating and programming.

Requirements:

  1. Masters Degree completed or in progress in college student personnel, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field (if no qualifying candidates apply, candidates without Master Degrees and sufficient work experience may be considered)

  2. 2 to 3 years’ experience in student affairs or an equivalent combination of leadership experience, with some supervision experience

  3. Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of North Carolina A&T State University

Preferred:

  1. Experience with student life in a residential campus with commitment to the ongoing enhancement of student learning and student life in such a setting.

  2. Experience with supporting and advocating students from diverse populations

  3. On-call and/or live-in experience in a university setting preferred.

  4. Specialized knowledge- Student Development Theory and Community Based Theory and those implications within a university setting.

  5. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, attention to detail, and basic understanding of assessing data.
