City of Grand Rapids Vehicle Service Worker in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Nature of Work

 

The purpose of this job is to service and perform minor repairs on light equipment. Assist mechanics on larger equipment when needed. Transfers vehicles to different departments and/or vendors for various repairs. Assists the Stockroom for shipping/receiving, parts runs, and counter help.

*ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES *

  • Performs preventative maintenance on a wide range of equipment including small engines, passenger vehicles, and light trucks. Typical services include changing oil, greasing moving parts, checking all fluids, tire air pressure, and other items as identified by the supplied equipment checklists
  • Prepares new vehicles for service by collecting data and applying decals and logos
  • Works in the tire shop to mount, dismount, balance, repair, and change tires. 
  • Performs small repairs on all equipment including light bulbs, light wiring, tires, batteries, starters, alternators, hitches, trailers, etc.
  • Assists other mechanics with repairs of equipment
  • Operates a large wrecker or small wheel lift truck in a variety of conditions and scenarios
  • Assists counter service and shipping and receiving
  • Maintains parking lot removing snow and clearing sidewalks
  • Performs related work as required

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES SPECIFIC TO THE POLICE VEHICLE SERVICE WORKER The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. 

  • Maintain the police department's motor pool by keeping the area clean and all related equipment serviceable.  Related responsibilities include sweeping/washing the floor, vehicle washing and inspection, removal of refuse, coordinating the efficient storage of vehicles, and coordinating activities with contract workers.  
  • Monitor all police department vehicles for maintenance and repair.
  • Coordinate and maintain a schedule with the City's Motor Equipment Services (MES) for vehicle service and repairs to ensure an operational vehicle fleet.  
  • Coordinate transport of vehicles to and from MES. 
  • Clean and disinfect vehicles that are contaminated with biohazard materials.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of all department vehicles (interior and exterior).  Ensure all fleet vehicles are equipped with necessary supplies and equipment for in-service police response.    
  • Assist department personnel with various tasks such as mail delivery, food and water supplies, local deliveries, and any additional administrative duties as required. 

     

     

Minimum Training and Experience

 

Required Education and Experience 

  • High school diploma (or GED equivalent)

-- AND--

  • At least one (1) year of related work experience in the servicing of light and heavy equipment

--OR--

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

Required Licenses or Certifications 

  • Valid Michigan Drivers License
