Corewell Health Unit Secretary Adult Critical Care in Grand Rapids, Michigan

About this unit

1H is a 22-bed adult critical care unit at Blodgett Hospital. 1H cares for medical ICU patients as well as some surgical ICU patients. As a team member on 1H, you will see a wide variety of different ages and types of diagnoses and participate in many different types of ICU level care. Some of those diagnoses include stroke, sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and respiratory failure. You will get to learn about ventilators, sedation, paralytics, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post cardiac arrest cooling, ICU thrombolytic therapy, and much more!

Scope of work

Unit Secretaries performs receptionist/secretarial duties and maintains confidential records, supplies and equipment per hospital and unit specific standards. The Unit Secretary is the “go to” on each unit for clerical support. Responsibilities include taking phone calls, helping with directions to all visitors or outside team members to the unit (lab, radiology, patient transport, nutrition services, environmental services), calling/paging support when directed by clinical staff, assisting with discharge, admit, and transfer paperwork, ordering supplies, ensuring rooms are appropriately stocked, and sometimes answering call lights for any non-direct patient care needs, etc.

Orientation and Core Schedule

Orientation will be 36 hours per week if new to the Unit Secretary role. The orientation schedule will include weekdays and is dependent upon the preceptor's schedule. After Orientation weeks are completed, the core schedule begins.

The core schedule for this opening:

  • Friday 2:30pm -10:30pm, Saturday 6:30am - 7pm

  • Sunday 6:30am - 7:00pm

  • Friday 6:30am - 3:00pm

  • (Repeats same core pattern of Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Friday)

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 1 year of relevant related experience is preferred

  • Successful completion of competency-based orientation program
