Metro Health (now the University of Michigan Health-West) is looking for - Sleep Tech - Polysomnographic Technologist 

The Polysomnographic Technologist works under medical supervision of the Department Medical Director to perform and evaluate polysomnograms and other sleep disorders related testing. This individual functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology and will provide continuing education to patients for sleep related issues.

Requirements:

  • Must have/maintain a credential as a Registered Polysomnographic Technician (RPSGT), Licensed Registered Nurse, or Licensed Registered Respiratory Therapist.
  • Licensed Registered Nurses and Registered Respiratory Therapists must obtain one of the following sleep credentials (RPSGT, Registered Sleep Technologist, Registered Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorder Specialist) within 18 months from eligibility
  • Preferred Bachelor of Science in a health related field and minimum of a high school diploma.
  • Maintain BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • Must be able to work a 12 hour 3rd

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs sleep studies including Polysomnography, MSLT, MWT, PAP NAPS, In Home Sleep Testing in accordance with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. Complete monthly scoring competency and be able to score/stage sleep records to the level needed to maintain accreditation.
  2. Will contact patients with test results, assist physicians during clinic hours, provide patients with education related to testing procedures and will assist with quality programs- (Day shift only)
  3. Will maintain and care for sleep center equipment
  4. Interact with patients, physicians and other medical staff in accordance with hospital policy and best practice standards
  5. Perform other assigned duties, work different shifts, cover PTO, sick calls and aid with other coverage needs. Perform EEG
  6. Obtain/Maintain credentials related to the essential functions of the department and will complete required continuing education.
  7. Recognize sleep/wake complaints, interview patients to asses pertinent health/sleep history, communicate with physicians or team leader to clarify orders, setup and calibrate equipment, apply electrodes, monitor EKG, EMG, EOG, EEG throughout a sleep study as well as be able to note/correlate clinical events in order to the ensure the safety and welfare of patients.
  8. Understand the indicators/contradictions for positive airway pressure and how to administer oxygen. Provide patients with an appropriate mask fitting and education related to durable medical equipment.
  9. Attend staff meetings and complete hospital specific and required continuing education.
  10. Be proficient in sleep software and appropriately document in the hospital electronic medical record.
  11. Must complete one AASM approved Continuing Education Credit per month.
