Trinity Health Neuro-Ophthalmology Assistant in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Description:

Performs, and records neuro-ophthalmologic tests, such as but not limited to, visual acuity, color testing, Amsler grid, formal perimetry evaluation (Humphrey visual field and Goldmann), Ocular Coherence Tomography testing and ophthalmic photography.

· Assists with patient flow in conjunction with physician, to patients with visual disturbance from optic nerve disease, central nervous system disorders, ocular motility dysfunction, and/or pupillary abnormalities.

· Troubleshoots all neuro-ophthalmology, equipment, connectors and cabling. Sets up computer and calibrates amplifiers using appropriate settings

· Explains testing procedures to the patients and their families.

· Oversee the work performed by the Ophthalmic Technician Trainee

· Performs vital signs and other clinical tests as delegated by physician.

· Performs accurate record keeping duties using the computer on all clinical visits and follow-ups, etc

· Performs business office functions as needed

· Response to patient requests timely and accurately based on provider direction.

· Administers ophthalmic drops according to Physician orders. Demonstrates through skills competency on an annual basis, to be validated by Physician according to the scope of practice recognized by Joint Commission of Allied Health Professionals Organization (JCAHPO).

· Maintains adequate supply inventory

· Responsible for self-education.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Neuro Ophthalmic Tech performs all essential functions of the Trainee plus:

· Oversees the work performed by the Ophthalmic Technician Trainee

· Assist in charge entry by identifying the facility charge and clearly documentsthe charge

May measure or record mental status, perform confrontation visual field, pupil examination, exophalmometry, and fundus photography.

· Maintains COA Certification.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of a physician, assists with the coordination of neuro-visual patient care including Neuro-Ophthalmology procedures and health histories while rooming patients. Assists in the patient flow of neuro-ophthalmology clinic. May oversee the Ophthalmic Technician Trainee in the absence of a Certified Ophthalmic Technician.

What you will need:

  • Graduate from a formal accredited COA-OMP Clinical Traning Program; OR graduate of a formal accredited COA-OMP training program PLUS worked at least 500 hours under ophthalmologic supervision; OR High School graduate or equivalent PLUS completion of a COA-OMP approved independent study course PLUS worked at least 1000 hours under ophthalmologic supervision.

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO). Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.
