University of Michigan Health-West (Formally Metro Health) is looking for  Clinical Nurse Specialist-Nursing Administration

Consistent with the ANA Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists Statement on Specialist Practice and Education, in collaboration with Clinical Service Leadership, the Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible and accountable for advancing the standard of nursing practice within three spheres of influence: patient, nurses and nursing practice, organizations and systems through expert clinical practice, education, consultation, systems leadership, serving as a change agent, collaboration and research. This leadership role assumes action, initiation, innovation, visible distinction, and demonstrated contribution to change.

Requirements:

  • Clinical Nurse Specialist certification required within one year.
  • Graduate preparation must have included clinical application of the CNS role component. If clinical application of the CNS role was not included, a post-master's CNS certificate must be obtained within 3 years of date of hire.
  • Current, unrestricted Michigan Registered Nurse licensure
  • Minimum 3 years clinical nursing experience.
  • Clinical knowledge and expertise in specialty area, national certification in specialty preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills at the level of an advanced practice nurse in leadership, communication, collaboration, mentoring, and change as evidenced by portfolio, recommendation letters, references, interview, and/or demonstration.
  • Demonstrated ability at the level of an advanced practice nurse to utilize evidence to develop, teach, guide, and implement practice standards and policies.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) -- current
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS):
    • Required for Emergency Services and Critical Care Services
    • Preferred for Medical Surgical, Women's Health, and Surgical Services

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Functions with a high level of independent judgment, using skills and knowledge acquired through advanced education and experience to enhance patient care.

Contributes expert clinical nursing perspective to organizational planning and decision-making using expert knowledge, problem solving skills, evaluation, collaboration, leadership, and role modeling.

Develops criteria for and evaluates the quality and effectiveness of practice within the spheres of influence: the patient, nursing, and nursing practice, and organization and systems.

Directly interacts with patients, families, and groups of patients to promote health or well-being and improve quality of life.

Characterized by a holistic perspective in the advanced nursing management of health, illness, and disease states.

Consults with and seeks opportunities to advise nurses and other health care team members in the care of the complex patient and family by assessing, interpreting, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.

Supports consultee in the process of problem-solving based on specialized clinical expertise.

Acts as a resource and role model for collaboration by mentoring nursing staff in their roles, and mentoring members of the interdisciplinary health care team.

Influences resource utilization to promote safe, high quality, and cost-effective patient care aligned with the IOM Aims.

Collaborates with Nurse Educators and others on clinical education program development.

Provides resource for continuous quality improvement related to quality-of-care issues and efficient use of clinical resources by working with appropriate committees and management structures.

Leads and supports system groups to enrich the practice of nursing, improve patient outcomes
