Working/Functional Title

Learning Society Fellow

Position Summary

The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine's Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for the position of Learning Society Fellow for the Shared Discovery Curriculum.  In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape.  This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum, provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns.  It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing.

As part of the implementation, the college has created learning societies to provide medical students with a personal and supportive learning environment.  All students are members of one of four learning societies: Jane Addams, John Dewey, Justin Morrill and Daniel Hale Williams.  Learning societies are subdivided into small groups of eight students, and it is within these scholar groups that students debrief their clinic experiences and participate in case-based learning with their faculty fellow.  A Chief leads each learning society and oversees the fellows within that learning society.  A curriculum assistant supports each learning society and Chief. The learning societies and Academy are the responsibility of the Director of the CHM Academy.

The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University invites applicants for the position of Learning Society Fellow to participate in the undergraduate medical education in the Shared Discovery Curriculum. CHM Learning Society Fellows participate during the Early Clinical Experience (ECE) phase (Year 1) and the Middle Clinical Experience (MCE) phase (Year 2) of the medical school curriculum. CHM Learning Society Fellows will engage in various activities in support of student learning. Through these interactions with students, fellows are expected to develop long-term supportive relationships with small groups of students.

Learning Society Fellows are responsible for case-based small group instruction, small group debriefing of students' clinical experiences, and meetings with students for coaching, mentoring and reviewing student portfolios. Fellows also provide coverage and back-up for small groups. Faculty fellows with a background in basic or social sciences also act as resources for students and other fellows. All fellows are expected to complete the required documentation of small group and individual student meetings on a timely basis. CHM Learning Society Fellows participate in weekly faculty development and faculty working sessions, as well as participate in learning society activities. Learning Society Fellows will have the possibility to participate in educational scholarship related to the work of the learning societies.

The academic rank and department will be determined based on the qualifications and experience. This position is 27.5%, appointed on an annual basis. New fellows are interviewed on an as-needed basis when teaching positions become available.
