Job Description

NREL’s Site Operations – Project Management and Construction (PMC) group is looking for a Project Controller. The PMC group manages facility design and construction projects at all NREL campuses. The project controller position is designed to support PMC staff in organizing projects and deliverables, tracking projects to established budgets and timelines, and interfacing with technical and support organizations on significant matter across the laboratory to keep projects on track.

Project Controller duties include a variety of tasks that support technical projects without appreciable direction. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Track and manage day-to-day construction project financials including working with Finance to track funding allocations and Work Authorizations.

  • Planning Projects: Work with project managers and other leads to refine budgets and timelines for new projects. As projects are executed, track and retain deliverables against the project timeline.

  • Reporting: Provide regular client reporting on subcontracts and projects. Assist project managers with developing monthly, quarterly and annual reports. Track changes including funding, and assist project managers in monthly status meetings.

  • Use enterprise planning tools to support project planning, project execution, and project closeout. Estimate new projects in NREL pricing tool by cost element.

  • Enter project budgets into Enterprise Performance Management tool by cost element and update forecast quarterly.

  • Support NREL Capital Investments Inventory NCII portfolio and program management.

  • Support gathering and double-checking financial information for deliverables to DOE’s Facility Information Management System.

Sample specific tasks:

  • Work with project managers to establish and track against timelines, plan resources into tracking programs, monitor progress against deliverables, and track costs against plans.

  • Track reporting requirements and prepare same for monthly project status meetings.

Position may be remote however it is expected the successful candidate will be in the Golden, CO offices at least one-week per quarter for detailed project meetings with Project Managers and other stakeholders and to update forecasts.

Basic Qualifications

Relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant JD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Applies extensive technical expertise, and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques and standards. Considered internal subject matter expert. Extensive knowledge of laws, regulations, principles, procedures and practices related to specific field. Excellent leadership, project management and problem solving skills. Ability to use various computer software programs.

Additional Required Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in finance, cashflow analysis, and business processes.

  • Ability to organize, multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with team members and project leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply extensive technical expertise to understand technical concepts and data analytics, and conduct unusually complex analyses.

  • Expert resource for staff who will continually develop project management skills and advanced concepts, including use of new or existing financial analyses or project management tools to meet project needs.

  • Proficiency and extensive experience using Microsoft Office 365 products (Project, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other computer software programs needed to effectively track and manage a project.

  • Ability to prepare professional communications and documents that are appropriate for internal and external stakeholders and senior leadership.

  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, teaming, and collaboration skills including experience with senior customer/partner relationships regarding significant matters, and expectations management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of PowerBI

  • Extensive knowledge of Financial Project Management

  • Extensive experience with Teaming Software (Microsoft Teams, and SharePoint).

  • Extensive experience or knowledge of using Oracle based platforms.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Professional IV / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees.
