Position SummaryTo design structural foundations and/or hull modifications for U.S. Navy and commercial ships and to mentor/train junior engineers. Candidate would be responsible for leading ship-class efforts with full range of design integration between multiple disciplines. Candidate would be responsible for performing basic structural calculations to support design work as well as checking final drawings for accuracy, efficiency of design, cost effectiveness and functionality.ResponsibilitiesAnalyze ship as-built and/or modification drawings to determine impact of proposed ship upgrades.Coordinate all structural work between multiple alterations and integrate with all affected disciplines/team mates.Lead junior engineers and designers on ship check activities, such as identifying existing ship structure and foundations and recording sizes and locations in respect to internal ship datums and frames.Confirm all junior engineer and designer work and interference control plans onboard ship.Expert in ship construction techniques, terminology and general characteristics (port/starboard, fore/aft, ABL, CG, mold lines, V-lines, etc.)Answer drawing LARs with cost-effective design solutions.Responsible for leading design projects and coordinating all work with structural designers, CAD support staff and Engineer Level III.Provide organization of design materials (manuals, tech sheets) and coordinate material items with vendors as appropriate.Check all KES structural drawings meet government or ABS requirements and integrate with other engineering disciplines.Expert at all AWS and MIL-STD welding symbols and terminology and able to specify required welding processes.Responsible for working closely with and mentoring Structural Engineer Level I.Integrate with Structural Engineer Level III on complex design projects (i.e. FEA models)Coordinate all design work and work closely with lead structural engineer.Other duties as assigned.ExperienceMust have strong computer skills and be proficient with 2D CAD software and Microsoft Excel.Qualifications and Education RequirementsBachelor degree in Naval Architecture, Civil, Mechanical or Marine Engineering and 5+ years of structural design experience which includes 2D CAD drawing development or in lieu of degree 10 years relevant experience may be substituted for BS degree.This position requires an existing U.S. Government granted personnel security clearance at the Secret levelU.S. Citizenship is requiredMust be willing and able to travel for shipchecks.Physical ability to climb, lift, bend over and fit in tight spaces is required.PreferredPrevious employment with an engineering planning department.
