Job Description

The office of Michigan’s Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS) has a focused mission of providing statewide public safety communications for more than2075 state, local, federal, tribal and private public safety agencies. Through our employees, MPSCS handles the second-largest trunked communication system in the world with291 tower sites, 90state and local public safety dispatch centers with490radio dispatch consoles and82Computer Aided Dispatch consoles,117,716radios and7,046 fire pagers. The MPSCS Network Communication Center(NCC) monitors systems operations 24 hours a day to ensure the system is ready to assist Michigan’s first responders.

The function of any public safety communications system is to assure the rapid response and cooperation of emergency personnel. The MPSCS achieves this through reliable, easy-to-use statewide coverage and advanced technology. The ability to share information on demand and in real time, whether it is voice or data, is critical to public safety in Michigan.

JOB DESCRIPTION: As an advanced level tower technician, performs installations, repairs, and maintenance of equipment located at communications sites in the Michigan Public Safety Communications System (MPSCS). Performs installations, and repairs of remote-control lines. Performs research, design, and installations of new site equipment. Maintains all asset management records, and inventory for site equipment and helps develop standards and procedures for the Site Maintenance teams statewide. This position oversees work of steeplejacks of lesser grade and provides training for various sub systems for the MPSCS. This position is responsible for identifying and evaluating workplace hazards. This includes identifying unsafe conditions and work practices and correcting safe or unhealthy conditions and work practices in a timely manner. This position may require overnight travel during the course of the duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information effectively. Computer database and spreadsheet experience. Knowledge and experience in the Tower Technician trade pertaining to state-of-the-art site equipment and test equipment.

Advanced troubleshooting and repair skills that demand thorough knowledge of HVAC theories and equipment and thorough knowledge of electronic principles, theory, and equipment.

Candidates selected for this position must complete the Michigan State Police background check. This extensive background check requires fingerprinting for state and federal criminal background records. The background search will include, but is not limited to arrests, criminal charges, criminal convictions, and any information regarding contact with a criminal justice agency.

Required Education and Experience

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Five years of experience in the installation, erection, maintenance, repair, painting, dismantling, and inspection of unusually high structures (such as bridges and radio towers), including one year equivalent to a Tower Technician E9.

Paid Parental Leave:Eligible employees can take12 weeks of paid leaveimmediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.
