Description
The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Signal/Traffic Technician with the Street Department. This position, under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control devices, public works band radio system and related electronic control equipment as assigned. Work varies, requiring individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures, with some leeway for discretion and independent action. Reports to the Signals/Traffic Foreman and in his absence the Street Superintendent.
Examples of Duties
Assists in the construction, installation, troubleshooting, maintenance of traffic control and signal systems, installing and repairing signal heads, controllers, Opticom’s, microprocessors and related equipment.
Assists in maintaining all records for maintenance of traffic signals, school zones and other electrical equipment.
Maintains, programs, and troubleshoots radio equipment.
Recommends the purchase of materials necessary to construct, maintain or complete projects.
Inspects signals, replaces burned-out lamps, broken cover plates, sign and reflectors. Inspect signals and replace burned-out lamps, broken cover plates, signs, signal heads, and reflectors. Operation of a bucket truck working at up to 40 feet in height.
Investigates complaints of malfunctioning traffic control devices, radios and other electrical equipment as assigned.
Maintains the inventory list of banners; Hang banners, for the different City events and seasons.
Operates department equipment; trucks, backhoes, diggers, etc.
Follows federal and state safety rules and procedures at all times.
Subject to 24-hour call-outs, emergency and storm related activities and high voltage hazards.
Performs construction inspections for public rights-of-way excavation permits.
Prepares for and participates in work activities during snow season as required.
Assists other departments with Street Department related activities, including special events.
Paint street markings and crosswalks for public roads and schools; remove graffiti as needed.
Replace and maintain traffic and street signs as well as provide a record for GIS mapping.
Conduct locates of traffic signals/underground wires.
Setup and monitor traffic counters for traffic studies.
Subject to the Department's Random Drug/Alcohol Testing Program.
Performs any other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, electronic component maintenance, traffic signal maintenance is required. Must be able to operate required equipment used to perform daily duties. Should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and strong communication skills. Must be able to listen and apply information and instructions. Ability to effectively interface with City employees and the general public.
Education, Certification and Experience: High school diploma or GED. College level course work or vocational training in electricity and/or electronics is desirable or related work experience. Capability of being certified by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) as a Traffic Signal Technician Level II. Valid Kansas Class B CDL driver's license required or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

Environment: Work is performed in all types of weather. Majority of work is performed outdoors, i.e. moderate to extreme cold and heat, snow, rain, hail, sleet, high and gusting winds, dust, and dry conditions.
Surfaces: Includes, but not limited to dirt, sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt, grass and wood.
Physical Characteristics: Includes, but not limited to, bend, kneel, push, pull, reach, hold, stand, walk, jump, sit, drive, and ability to lift up to 100 pounds and frequently carrying objects weighing 75-100 pounds.
