At our Research & Development Department in Medtronic, plc, in Galway Ireland we focus on the development of cutting-edge medical devices in the Coronary, Structural Heart, PVH, Cardiac Rhythm Management and Neuromodulation space. Our Engineers in Galway are directly involved in the development of innovative products for use in medical procedures.

This is an extremely exciting time for this organization as we focus on dealing with the growing opportunity to provide new, minimally invasive, treatment options to more patients.

This Senior R&D (Research and Development) Manager role will be responsible for the development of a large Engineering organization and be responsible for our Interventional Pain therapy area, working with cross functional partners within the OU (Organization Unit) on the development of strategies and our product pipeline.

Medtronic pioneered the field of neuromodulation with the first commercially available spinal cord stimulator (SCS) to treat chronic pain and engineered the first deep brain stimulation (DBS) system to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson’s. We also designed the first implantable drug pump to deliver medication directly to the intrathecal space in the spine as well as developing the field of balloon Kyphoplasty to treat vertebral compression fractures.

A Day in The Life Of:

  • Guide, grow, and motivate an exceptionally talented, diverse, world-class performing engineering team responsible for the design and development of pioneering transcatheter medical devices and procedures.

  • As part of the senior management team, you will participate in the ongoing development and scaling of the organization in line with business demands and ensure that we have the skillsets in place to deliver predictable outcomes.

  • Partner with internal and external experts to maintain and strengthen relevant clinical and technical expertise and to contribute to strategic planning.

  • Grow and nurture cross site and cross functional relationships in a large, multi-site, matrixed organization.

  • Support and ensure the achievement of project objectives and milestones with initially complex or undetermined outcomes.

  • Contribute to project decisions using personal expertise, customer input, and strong engineering and clinical judgment.

  • Manage high-level engineers, and other managers, involved in an array of product development and technology exploration projects.

  • Actively mentor, coach, and ensure career development plans are in place for direct reports.

  • Collaborate with core teams to establish objectives and evaluate the progress of direct reports.

  • Responsible for managing functional cost center budget and resource allocation.

  • Understand and comply with company policies & procedures and external standards & guidance.

  • Generate novel and unique solutions to both engineering and organizational challenges.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Level 8 Degree in Engineering or related discipline, Masters/ PhD preferred and desirably with 10 years relevant direct engineering experience within a similar environment.

  • A minimum of three to five years direct managerial experience of engineers and a career history of demonstrated progressive management experience.

  • Excellent team building, communication, people management and management skills

  • Dynamic team player and mentor and can work effectively and proactively on a global team.

  • Experienced in the medical device market and have a proven result driven record of accomplishment.

  • Experience in orthopedics and/ or product development in the spine area preferred.
