ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee the research and scholarly activities of the faculty members within the department.

  • Ensure appropriate and optimal use of human, financial, space and other resources to successfully manage the educational and research missions of the department.

  • Provide mentoring for faculty to encourage and support scholarship and research.

  • Support research within the department as well as collaborative efforts with other departments and programs in the university community.

  • Encourage, facilitate, and support all efforts to acquire research funding.

  • Identify appropriate internal controls for the department and provide mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.

  • Conduct and publish research and obtain external funding for research and/or training programs.

  • Teach and mentor graduate students.

  • Promote a culture of “Service Excellence” throughout the University.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD, MD, or equivalent degree, eight to ten years of related experience, demonstrated familiarity with academic administration in their specialty field and comprehensive understanding of an academic environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in health disparities or minority health research.

  • Demonstrated experience with graduate education including mentoring and teaching.

  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of an academic environment, and the practice of medicine and biomedical research.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain collegial relationships with peers, faculty, staff, and students across disciplines.

  • Documented expertise in the process of scholarly inquiry and publications, demonstrating ability to support and maintain intellectual growth within an academic environment that emphasizes the securing of research funds.

  • Visionary leadership and a philosophical approach focusing on the overall success of the department.

  • A commitment to developing programmatic initiatives.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including a high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with a variety of individuals.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience managing multiple programs.

  • Strong publication record, research funding and/or potential to secure research funding.

SALARY:

Commensurate with experience.
