JOB DESCRIPTION:

Conduct data science research targeted towards the development of clinical applications, teach biomedical informatics courses in support of departmental graduate programs, and assist in administrative duties to further the goals of the department and school.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The department is especially interested in seeking a candidate with strong expertise in Artificial Intelligence, including deep learning methods applied to the analysis of structured and unstructured electronic health records (EHRs), social, drug, omics, and other biomedical data. Applicants must have a strong interest in targeting such methods towards the development of clinical applications. The successful candidate will have evidence of past publications in major recognized biomedical informatics journals and conferences, and have a history of obtaining extramural funding from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. Applicants should have experience or show a strong potential for teaching and mentoring graduate-level students, and is expected to teach data science courses that are aligned with the applicant’s expertise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Doctoral degree (PhD or DrPH) in biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, computer science, or data science with at least 1 years of related experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of related experience in statistics, biostatistics, health informatics, or computer science in the healthcare field. Experience in the design and analysis of health data (electronic health record data, social media, drug, omics, and other data from hospitals or health systems) towards the development of clinical applications. Prior experience in submitting and attaining federal or state funding, as PI or Co-I. Classroom teaching experience. Proficiency in computing, including knowledge of statistical packages, programming, and querying languages, (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Python, SQL) Familiarity with database management and data processing. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Good organization skills. Working knowledge of statistical and scientific research design. Knowledge of data files handling techniques and engineering.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in statistics, biostatistics, health informatics, or computer science in the healthcare field.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with a wide range of individuals.

• Proficient in communicating research and knowledge to non-informaticians (statisticians, health researchers, medical professionals, students, etc.).

• Experience in the design and analysis of health data (electronic health record data, social media, drug, omics, and other data from hospitals or health systems) towards the development of clinical applications.

• Experience in submitting and attaining federal or state funding, as PI or Co-I.

• Experience in classroom teaching.

• Proficiency in computing, including knowledge of statistical packages, programming, and querying languages, (e.g., SAS, SPSS, R, Python, SQL).

• Familiarity with database management and data processing.

• Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and organization skills.

Responsibilities

• RESEARCH. (a) Conduct data science research targeted towards the development of clinical applications. (b) Develop new data science methodologies leading to an independent research agenda. (c) Lead and collaborate with faculty on federal and state grant proposals. (d) Lead and collaborate with faculty to publish manuscripts in high impact journals and conferences.

• TEACHING AND CONSULTATION. (a) Teach graduate level and short courses based on UTMB faculty and staff requirements. (b) Provide data science consultation to UTMB faculty, staff, and students.

• SERVICE. (a) Assist in administrative duties at the departmental, school, and university levels as approved by the departmental chair. (b) Participate and lead national and international data science and biomedical informatics committees. (c) Review manuscripts and grant applications.

SALARY:

Commensurate with experience.
