BUSINESS UNIT: TERMINALS

Kinder Morgan is the largest independent terminal operator in North America, providing a strong, reliable network of 144 terminals serving our customers’ storage, distribution, blending and logistical needs. Our terminals store and handle renewable fuels, petroleum products, chemicals, vegetable oils and other products. We have a combined liquids storage capacity of approximately 151 million barrels and handle about 59 million tons of dry bulk materials annually.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Under the general supervision of the Supervisor-Maintenance, the technician installs, maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and maintains documentation on all electrical and instrumentation systems associated with the pipeline, terminal and control center operations.

•Performs preventive maintenance services and calibrations of all site instrumentation and electrical systems.

•Maintain and troubleshoot cathodic protection systems.

•Repairs non-functioning or malfunctioning equipment.

• Reads and interprets schematics, instrument and electrical wiring diagrams and specifications.

•Prepares all required work related documentation in a timely manner.

•Assists operations personnel with equipment lock-out/tag-out procedures.

•Installs and repairs DOT, OSHA and Coast Guard regulated equipment.

•Provides training to operations and contractors on the proper use and maintenance of electrical and instrument equipment.

•Orders parts and supplies, both standard inventory stock and/or those needed for a specific job.

•Obtains required permits for work to be performed (SCADA, safety, hot-work, etc.).

•Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

EDUCATION:

•High School Diploma or GED

•Certification through an approved electrical apprenticeship journeyman level program or equivalent

EXPERIENCE/SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE:

•Working knowledge of vapor recovery systems, truck rack loading systems (Dan-Loads, Meter Custody), tank level measurement (VAREC, SAAB/Emerson Rosemount), motor operated valve actuators, and National Electrical Code and state and local codes

•Knowledge and/or experience in medium voltage motor starters and VFD's

•A minimum of four (4) years instrumentation/electrical maintenance experience in industry OR

• A minimum of one year of experience in a bulk liquid storage terminal utilizing Saab tank radar gauges, John Zinc / MWR vapor combustors AND possess an Associate’s Degree in Instrumentation/Electrical Technology or related discipline.

•Practical experience in electronics, test equipment, instrumentation, SCADA (Supervision Control and Data Acquisition), print reading and electrical systems (voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, etc.).

•Knowledge and experience in electrical distribution, sub-stations, power transformers and motor control switchgear (50 volts to l5kv).

•Prior maintenance or operations experience must include being knowledgeable in chemical process manufacturing, troubleshooting & repair of various electrical and pneumatic instrumentation, instrument calibration, tank level gauging, liquid loading/unloading, vapor collection/combustor operation plant safety rules & regulations.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

•Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.

•Must pass and complete Safety training/certification as required by customers to work in their facilities and as required by Kinder Morgan at all locations.

•Successfully complete Kinder Morgan’s Operator Qualification (OQ) Program in compliance with the Office of Pipeline Safety of the U. S. Department of Transportation’ (DOT) Qualification of Pipeline Personnel Regulation (49 CFR Part 192 Subpart N and Part 195 Subpart G). Successful completion will be determined by written and oral examinations and an on-the-job evaluation.

•Must obtain and/or meet all requirements to enter foreign trade zones; such as background checks by both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security, i.e. obtain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)

•The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.

•Proficient in computer applications including MS Windows and MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

•Strong analytical and mechanical skills and aptitude.

•Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks and remain productive while under minimal supervision.

• Be able to perform all the specific job responsibilities, possess a high level of mechanical & electrical aptitude, be an effective communicator, and possess basic computer competencies.

• Well-developed communication and organizational skills.

•Must be able to effectively communicate verbally with all levels of management

• Respond appropriately during site emergencies as directed by the Site Emergency Director.

•Must be willing to work overtime with little or no notice during the week, weekends, holidays, etc. as dictated by operations

•In order to perform the essential duties, regular work attendance is required.

•Must be willing and able to work as a part of team, take direction from supervisor(s), prioritize work schedules, focus attention to details, and follow work rules

•Ability to carry a company issued cell phone/radio and be on-call during and after regular business and non-working hours including after dark hours, for work as may be required, assigned, and scheduled as dictated by operations

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability and willingness to work in confined spaces, elevated and waterfront areas, and other areas where fresh breathing air, hot work permits, lock-out/tag-out, fire watch and other similar safety procedures and working conditions are required.

• May also be exposed to electric shock, chemical fumes, rotating equipment, and other similar industrial hazards.

•Physical requirements include but are not limited to walking and standing for long durations; walking up and down ladders and storage tank stairways; negotiating uneven surfaces; crawling, stooping, and carrying, pushing or pulling a minimum of 50 pounds on level and uneven ground, walkways and stairways; kneeling, bending of torso and legs, holding one or both arms overhead for long durations, hand dexterity, full movement of head and extremities (hands, arms, legs, fingers, feet, etc.), acceptable hearing, etc.

•Operate and work out of a bucket truck.

•Regularly exposed to outside in adverse weather conditions and also but not limited to: heights in excess of 5 feet, work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas, etc.

•Wear personal protective equipment, FRC, etc. other equipment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•An associate degree in instrument technology or better.

•Terminal, pipeline and truck loading or other experience in the movement and storage of gas and/or liquids.

•Knowledge and experience in installation, programming and troubleshooting Allen Bradley programmable logic controllers (PLC’s).

•Knowledge in transmitters controlling temperature, level, pressure and flow.

•Knowledge and/or experience in installation, programming and troubleshooting SAAB tank radar gauges.
