Job Description:
The Histology Technician supports biobanking of human tissue, histology and sample distribution performed at the Network for Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes’ (nPOD) and the Cardiovascular Repository for Type 1 Diabetes (CaRe-T1D) Organ Processing and Pathology Core (OPPC) within the Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine. This position will perform complex procedures and techniques to support OPPC functions.
Job Duties include, but not limited to;
FFPE microtomy and OCT frozen sectioning of nPOD and CaRe-T1D case samples, as well as for off-site investigator sample requests. Assist with sample archiving and retrieval for distribution. Operate multiple laboratory information management systems for sample tracking and histology. Assist in coordinating sample distributions and sample inventory management.
Embed sectioned tissue of pancreas, heart, spleen, kidney, lymph nodes, and duodenum. Monthly completion of preventative maintenance of embedding station and organization of embedding area.
Perform gross tissue processing including receipt of tissue, gross and fine dissection, tissue fixation, freezing, and sample storage.
Perform manual special staining techniques, such as Trichrome, Pentachrome, and Verhoeff van Gieson stains. Assist in the operation and maintenance of automatic H&E and Immunohistochemistry staining machines. QC quality of staining in scanned slide inventory database.
Complete decalcification protocols on tissue when necessary. Edit and write SOPs. Review scientific literature to maintain and further understanding of Core technologies.
Attend weekly meetings. Assist in training and assessing new OPPC staff. Communicate with internal and external clients regarding OPPC and nPOD.
Assist with routine lab maintenance including ordering supplies, calibrating and checking equipment for proper function. Troubleshoot equipment failures and/or arrange for help with repairs. Evaluate new equipment to determine if it meets OPPC specific actions.
Expected Salary:
Starting salary is between $52,000 - $55,000
Minimum Requirements:
Associate's degree in a biological science or completion of a NAACLS accredited Histology program and one year of laboratory experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) license and certification.
Histology experience working with human tissue such as pancreas, heart, kidney, lymph nodes, spleen and others.
Extensive skills in microtomy and manual special stains.
High attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
High proficiency in MS Office, especially Access and Excel. Ability to maintain accurate records and inventories.
Interpersonal/human relations skills – must be able to work collaboratively with other histologists
