Actalent Laboratory Technician in Frederick, Maryland

Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Job Description The successful candidate will demonstrate a basic understanding of scientific principles and biology, and will be responsible for performing routine tasks accurately and efficiently. This role requires a strong focus on cell culture, primary cell isolation from human tissue, and maintaining cells using aseptic techniques. The Scientist I will also perform mathematical calculations, record information accurately into various electronic databases, and consistently apply good documentation practices.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of scientific principles and biology.

  • Perform routine tasks accurately and efficiently.

  • Maintain and culture cells using aseptic techniques.

  • Isolate primary cells from human tissue.

  • Perform mathematical calculations such as viability, concentration, and density.

  • Record information accurately into various electronic databases, including raw and calculated data, inventory transfers, and routing hours.

  • Review data, recognize inconsistencies, and report them to the supervisor.

  • Troubleshoot and think critically to solve problems.

  • Apply good documentation practices consistently when documenting work.

  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned and be available for on-call schedules.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field.

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of aseptic techniques.

  • Experience in cell culture.

  • Experience in manufacturing.

  • Customer-focused and able to work under pressure.

  • Ability to anticipate needs and create solutions.

  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency and a 'can do' attitude.

  • Proven ability to follow policies and procedures, both written and verbal, and meet schedules.

  • Proficiency with business computer software, logistics-related databases, and ERP systems.

  • Strong organizational, record-keeping, and data analysis skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with small animal handling.

  • Knowledge of cryopreservation processes.

  • Familiarity with media and reagent preparation.

  • Experience with work order creation, entry, and closure.

  • Understanding of good documentation practices (GDP).

Work Environment

The position is based in a laboratory environment and may require working under various temperatures for up to ten hours per day. The role may involve standing for extended periods and handling potentially hazardous materials (chemical, biological). Flexibility is required to work any shift with advance notice of shift changes, and to accommodate varying schedules, hours, and overtime as needed. The nature of the work environment can contribute to varying degrees of stress throughout the day. Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with one week on-call per month. This is a 12-month contract position with the potential for conversion to full-time employment based on future needs, attrition, performance, and attendance.
