Vice President, Global Commercial Operations

Overall Summary

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Commercial Strategy & Operations (GCSO), the Vice President, Global Commercial Operations (GCO) will lead the Global Commercial Operations team as they innovate and embed capabilities, processes and technologies for the Gilead Commercial Organization. By partnering across the enterprise, GCO drives operational excellence and maximizes customer engagement, enabling Gilead’s commercialization strategy. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and experienced leader, with a strong track record of commercial success in the biopharmaceutical industry.

The GCO VP will work closely with the GCSO leadership team and with the leadership of G8 and US affiliate organizations as well as key global functional partners including Information Technology, Medical Affairs, Legal, Regulatory, Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing. They will focus on high-impact opportunities to improve business performance across multiple countries/regions, such as introducing operational infrastructure improvements and the processes and capability development needed to embed and sustain these capabilities.

The scope of this role includes oversight of a 55-person organization across the following global commercial operations functions: Commercial Learning & Development, Digital and Innovation; Commercial Excellence, Trade Operations, Congresses & Events, and Commercial Project Management.

This position is based in Foster City, CA.

Job Description:

The successful GCO VP will be a dynamic, experienced individual with a strong track record of strategy and team leadership across a variety of global settings in the biopharmaceutical industry. They must have the proven ability to effectively manage complex and innovative projects, influence stakeholders without authority, effectively network across the organization and communicate with senior leaders all within a dynamic commercial environment. Previous operational experience such as a General Manager or Business Unit Director in a major market is highly desirable.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish clear goals, priorities and budget for GCO; assure that objectives are aligned with GCSO and G9 affiliate objectives. Assure ongoing feedback and continuous improvement for ongoing alignment.

  • Maintain a high performing commercial operations organization, both within GCO and with Commercial Operations leaders and teams across the Gilead organization. Foster an inclusive culture.

  • Enhance capabilities and organizational designs to fit for future.

  • Demonstrate enterprise mindset, be a thought partner for cross functional leaders, and encourage collaboration.

  • Partner with cross functional stakeholders to set strategic vision, establish and manage efficient processes, tools, and technology. Partner with 3rd party vendors to provide optimal experience and efficiency of these operations.

Specific responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:

  • Develop and execute a holistic GCO strategic vision to balance near-term and long- term priorities and commit to a course of action to accomplish established goals. Provide guidance and oversight on new technologies and capabilities in terms of what can/should be effectively scaled across the global commercial organization

  • Represent commercial leadership on key cross-functional initiatives including Project BlueStream, Supply and Operations Planning, Anti-Counterfeiting Team, Project Leapfrog, Strategic Technology Council.

  • Forge strong working relationships with regional commercial partners, cross functional leadership (particularly other operations teams across GDSI, US Operations, Medical Affairs Operations and Kite) and senior executives.

  • Lead by example, respecting Gilead core values of integrity, accountability, teamwork, excellence, and inclusion.

  • Global travel is required for leadership of Stockley Park-based GCO team, periodic Commercial Operations Director Summits and meetings with Regional leadership teams.

  • Provide strategic guidance of Global Commercial Operations Functions including:

  • Global Trade Operations: Support affiliates with product distribution, inventory & contracting; Drive global supply governance with PDM; lead Commercial team engagement in Project BlueStream (SAP integration across GILD)

  • Global Commercial Excellence: Define the vision and ways of working for the commercial organization across Marketing & Omnichannel (OMC); Launch Readiness and Sales Excellence;

  • Global Digital and Innovation: Deliver next-gen tech solutions & services to enable OMC scaling, global web strategy, long term IT strategic planning​

  • Global Commercial Learning and Development: Define commercial learning strategy, drive innovative learning approaches and tools for impact​ across Product Training, Commercialization Center of Excellence and Learning Strategy and Technology

  • Project Leapfrog PMO: Collaborate closely with the Global Decision Sciences and Insights team as well as affiliate and regional leadership on the scale up of Project Leapfrog capabilities globally, maximizing customer engagement through Next Best Action decision engine, Modular Content, Key Account Management and the training and change management required to truly embed these capabilities. Report directly to Commercial Leadership Team on progress.

  • Congresses and Events: Deliver tier 1 global congresses; drive global M&E operational excellence; manage technology​

  • Commercial Project Management: Support and manage Commercialization & Established Product Teams​; Partner with Medical Affairs on Annual Planning Process​

Skills, Competencies and Experience:

Candidates must have the following demonstrated skill sets and experience:

  • Commercial experience and track record from General Manager or Business Unit Director market-facing role is a must, ideally including experience in the US market and also affiliate ex-US

  • Integrative decision-making considering alternatives and trade-offs based on logical assumptions, available resources, constraints and organizational values

  • Strong strategic thinking using knowledge of economic, financial, market and industry trends to contribute to effective business strategies and tactics

  • Technical expertise in Commercial Operations including how operations are a critical part of the delivery of commercial objectives from product launch to product sunset. Specific knowledge of digital/omnichannel strategy is a plus.

  • Effectively communicates with and influences others and seen as a thought partner to senior leaders in the organization and can use effective persuasion to gain acceptance of ideas. This role requires interacting directly with the leadership teams of affiliate across the G9. Multicultural fluency is critical.

  • Supports the development of team and individuals’ knowledge, skills and abilities so they can fulfil job responsibilities more effectively and efficiently

  • An inspiring leader garnering trust and motivating individuals and teams toward higher levels of engagement andperformance aligned with the organization’s needs and vision

  • Fifteen plus years’ relevant experience working in the biopharmaceutical industry in marketing and selling roles with increasing responsibilities, complexity and accountabilities; experience working in global markets such as the US or Europe is highly desirable

  • Experience in both in-line and global marketing

  • BA/BS degree required; an MBA and/or advanced scientific or medical degree highly desired
