Summary About the Position: Coordinates in the planning, managing, and conducting of an equine training program with the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment. This position is a TERM Not to Exceed 3 years position. It is time-limited and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. May be made permanent without further competition (see additional information). Responsibilities Serve as a horse trainer, riding instructor, and horse/harness driving specialist. Apply training to riders and horses to include bridling and saddling, exercising/conditioning of horses; groundwork; desensitization; communication through the reins; leg aids; horse psychology; harness driving. Be able to administer and instruct in the administration of first aid to horses, including the use of bandages and application of topical or intramuscular medicines. Maintain training and maintenance records on horses and Soldiers. Coordinate with veterinary personnel to ensure optimal animal health is maintained within training regimes. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service which includes 1) Provide instruction on proper riding technique with multiple level riders such as novice, intermediate, and advanced. 2) Train horses regarding riding, desensitization, harness training, and/or behavior to include both under saddle and on the ground 3.) Provide hitch technique instruction such as harnessing horses, driving a wagon with up to six horses, and/or training and conditioning horses for hitch driving. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Direct Deposit of Pay is required. TERM Appointment with option for conversion : To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating under such term appointment of at least fully successful or equivalent. This is a Mission Essential position: if this area experiences severe weather conditions that result in the installation being closed for normal business operations, you are still required to report for or remain on duty to maintain infrastructure operations, health, safety, and security. Position has been designated as Key: This position shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization without seriously impairing the capability of the agency to function effectively. Because of the essential nature of this position, shall require that it not be filled by members of the National Guard, Ready Reservists or military retirees with recall obligations to preclude such position from being vacated during a mobilization.
