U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Supervisory Historian in Fort McNair, District Of Columbia

Summary About the Position: Works under the supervision of Director, Historical Studies Directorate. Supervises historians assigned to research and write the Army's official histories and special studies. Responsibilities Serves as direct supervisor for a staff of military and civilian historians. Sets work priorities and schedules for completing historical projects. Provides guidance to personnel on immediate and long-range plans and gives assistance on major problem areas. Hears and resolves complaints from employees in the office. Supervises the provision of research support and development of historical products for the Army, Department of Defense agencies, Congress, the White House, and a variety of governmental agencies. Coordinates the work of multiple historians when projects require a team effort. Reviews drafts of finished works, amending or suggesting revisions in organization, presentation, and written expression. May divide work into discrete segments for division among subordinates and assimilates research results and written contributions into a coherent whole as the coordinating author of the final product. Revises products as necessary to better organize the material, to select language that will present the historical material clearly and concisely, and to maintain proper balance and perspective without distortion of the facts. Serves as a recognized authority and advisor on matters relating to military history. Represents the Department of the Army, the Department of Defense, and the Center of Military History at conferences of professional historical societies and related associations. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Historian: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.) evaluating historical manuscripts for sophistication, accuracy, literary and quality; 2.) rendering expert level interpretation and conclusions concerning history inquiries or proposed projects; 3.) assimilating history research results and written contributions into a coherent whole; 4.) developing significant historical products; and 5.) developing operational plans and manning requirements for historical projects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability to lead or supervise Oral Communication Program Management Technical Competence Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
