Description of Work Unit

Veterinary Health System

Veterinary Teaching Hospital

The successful candidate will join an internationally recognized small animal emergency and critical care program comprised of 5 small animal faculty criticalists, eight residents, 12 rotating small animal interns, and veterinary technicians dedicated to the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Services. The program is located in the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) in Fort Collins, Colorado, with an annual emergency caseload of nearly 8,000 dogs, cats, and zoologic companion animals. The CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a progressive and collaborative workplace with 28 veterinary specialties and dedicated residents, students, and technologists working towards a common goal. The critical care faculty can collaborate with faculty at both the Colorado State University Flint Animal Cancer Center and the Translational Medicine Institute. Additionally, the VTH is a Level II Veterinary Trauma Center (10 years), and has close research ties with colleagues at the Medical Center for the Rockies and CU Anschutz in Denver.

Cutting edge resources include multiple point of care ultrasound machines, Servo-I mechanical ventilators, and veterinary training simulators. Abundant diagnostic imaging resources including in and after-hours CT, MRI , PET -CT, ultrasonography.

The Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( CSUVTH ) in Fort Collins, Colorado is seeking applicants for an afternoon and evening position in the Urgent Care/Emergency Service for a boarded or board eligible critical care specialist. The ideal candidate would provide mentorship for emergency clinicians, rotating interns, and ECC residents to ensure exceptional patient care and customer service. This position is flexible, from a half time to a full-time position. Required Job Qualifications

  • A DVM or equivalent degree.

  • American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical care ( DACVECC ) board certification, European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical care ( ECVECC ), or board eligibility by start date.

  • Eligibility to obtain a State of Colorado Academic Veterinarian license.

The incumbent should have a strong interest in exceptional quality emergency medicine for dogs, cats, and zoologic companion animals while also providing engaging mentorship for all trainees. This position is expected to provide superior patient care by utilizing CSU’s resources and personnel. Clinical duties will consist of supervising patient & client care for small animal patients presented to the Small Animal Emergency Service during afternoon and evening hours, including weekdays and weekends, within this 24/7/365 unit.

Duty/Responsibility

Duties of the incumbent will include teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Additionally, participation in resident didactic instruction, intern-specific didactic instruction, journal clubs, and daily case rounds will be encouraged. The incumbent will work closely with and share the clinical duties of five (5) other small animal critical care faculty. Opportunities to participate in clinical research are available through resident and intern mentorship.

Duties will also include oversight of the Small Animal Intermediate Care Unit ( IMCU ) and will focus on patient care initiatives, veterinary technician training, client service/communication opportunities and continued service growth towards a 24/7/365 inpatient hospitalization unit. Our goal is to better intertwine routines and protocols that exist (or should exist) in the Critical Care Unit with the IMCU to have a more consistent approach to patient care throughout the VTH . Leadership in this unit will require 15% of the incumbent’s efforts and they will work closely with technician supervisors/managers who directly manage the technicians and other support team members in this unit.
