Description Overview: As a senior level Mechanical Engineer in the Hydraulic Flight Control Actuation team you will be a primary contributor for sizing, analysis and design of Fly-By-Wire Electrohydraulic and Electro-hydrostatic Control Stage manifolds and components used for the control of primary flight surfaces on the latest generations of commercial and military aircraft. Hydraulic Control Stages are typically composed of second-stage directional control valves, shut-off valves, compensators, damping valves, check valves and pressure relief valves all package within a hydraulic manifold. In the Platform Technology group you will apply your knowledge of design/analysis, materials, coatings, manufacturing methods and processes in a collaborative team environment to improve and advance Woodward’s hydraulic actuation product line. This work will establish the foundation for future actuation applications used in Fly-By-Wire systems. Specific Responsibilities: * Compile standard requirements, features, materials, and processes between multiple WWD sites, develop a method for trading these site standards versus the requirements to achieve the desired performance/life * Develop a multi-site design approach that unifies future Control Stage designs * Create standardized tools to perform component sizing based upon key performance requirements of specific applications * Conceptualize and design Hydraulic Control Stages used in flight control applications * Perform initial performance and stress analysis * Employ a Systems Engineering approach to understand end-user needs and decompose into detailed Control Stage component requirements * Work in a cross-functional and multi-site team environment * Lead a small working team through project phases of requirements capture, conceptual and detail design, manufacturing and verification activities * Create standardized tools to perform component sizing based upon key performance requirements of specific applications Preferred Qualifications: * Engineering experience in Aerospace industry * Experience with design and development of control valves, damping analysis and manifold packagingfor hydraulic or fueldraulic applications. Experience with fly-by-wire actuation is a plus * Experience with Requirements Capture, Integration, Validation and Verification * Experience working in a stage gate, product life cycle development process * Strong written and verbal communication skills * Project Management skills Purpose: The Staff Engineer reports to the Engineering Leader and is responsible for the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of engineering tasks. This position works under a moderate to low level of supervision. Independent technical decisions on work are covered by precedents; this position seeks direction/guidance on novel or controversial problems. In addition, this position may participate in project-specific relationship building with Customers, Suppliers, individuals or organizations. Essential Functions: * Plans, schedules and coordinates detailed phases of a project. * Devises new approaches to problems encountered. * Participates in and promotes process improvements within assigned areas. * Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices, but includes a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, non-standard materials and difficult coordination requirements. * Provides direct support of sales and development by sharing information in the form of proposals and design reviews. * Independently troubleshoots/analyzes component/system problems. * Independently writes and performs component tests. * Dispositions hardware with minimum supervision. * Sets technical direction on projects to level 1-2 Engineers. Other Functions: In some international locations, may perform the following functions: * Responsible for taking verbal and written descriptions from marketing and engineering and creating the physical representation of the product in both solid model and detail drawing form. * Makes decisions regarding dimensioning and tolerancing. * Ensures designs meet manufacturability, testability and reliability criteria. Materials and Equipment Used: * PC and related equipment. Working Environment / Physical Activities: * Work is generally performed in a normal office environment; however, the job may take the member into various areas of the plant where there is possible exposure to noise, chemical solutions, dust and temperatures above 80 degrees F. * Moderate travel may be required. ## Qualifications Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: * Effective written and verbal communication skills including presentations, (Customer, internal and management). Writes and communicates critical reports. Leads complex design reviews, internally and Customer. Expert technical writing skills (procedures, reports, etc.) * Competent complex problem solving/troubleshooting skills for both components and subsystems. * Competent in the use of PCs and associated software. Solid knowledge of appropriate WISE applications such as BOM, Item Master, NCR, EC screens and part tracking. * Promotes a cross-functional project team environment, communicates with Customers and leads small teams. May participate in setting technical direction/product strategies. Provides technical problems-solving guidance to others. * Working knowledge of standards and the ability to apply complex groupings of standards into designs. Ability to quickly learn, interpret and apply new standards. * Competent use and application of FEA tools; solid use of DFSS tools and methodologies; solid knowledge of Engineering quality systems (PLC, Engineering change, configuration management); solid ability to compute steady state results. Significant contributor to the design of complex products/systems. * Complete understanding of component functions and testing requirements. Understands manufacturing processes, drawings and geometric tolerances as well as shop standards. May direct or lead several Engineers. * Ability to strategically prioritize based on business needs. * May have company-recognized expertise. May represent Woodward at conferences and industrial events. * Demonstrates leadership skills; ability to drive results across organizational boundaries. Education or Formal Training: * BS degree in Engineering required. * Post-graduate technical degree desired. * Experience Required:* * Greater than 8 years in related field required, including post-graduate experience.
