Description of Work Unit

The mission of Research Information Technology ( RIT ) within the Office of the Vice President of Research ( OVPR ) at Colorado State University ( CSU ) is to provide innovative services for the campus research community that benefit research administration services and enable research activities at the institution, which can be leveraged centrally. Research IT is responsible for the information system strategies, assessment, and implementation.

The Office of the Vice President for Research has overall responsibility for promoting and facilitating the research enterprise at Colorado State University ( CSU ). The Office of the Vice President for Research will enable the University, its faculty, staff, and students to emerge as a world-class research institution complementing our learning, service, and outreach missions. The Office of the Vice President for Research will lead the 21st Century Land-Grant mission of CSU by fostering and supporting the research enterprise, promoting scholarship and artistry, instilling a culture of integrity, inclusion, diversity, and capitalizing on opportunities to address global challenges.

Position Summary

The position of Research IT Endpoint Specialist is under the direction of the Research Information Technology ( RIT ) department in the Office of the Vice President for Research ( OVPR ) division. This is a full-time, 12-month, administrative professional position reporting directly to the Endpoint Support & Network Services Lead of Research IT.

This position will collaborate with the endpoint team to support standard computers within the OVPR division, which includes over 500 computing devices across 14 departments and 22 units, serving more than 350 personnel. The ability and willingness to travel to four CSU campuses for in-person assistance is essential to provide effective technology support in a fast-paced, dynamic higher education environment.

The position of Research IT Endpoint Specialist is primarily responsible for maintaining and optimizing the performance, security, and functionality of instrumentation workstations maintained by the Analytical Resources Core ( ARC ). These specialized, vendor-provided computers directly connect to scientific equipment and require tailored support. Due to the unique hardware and proprietary software, many workstations cannot undergo standard software updates. The systems include a mix of legacy Windows and Linux operating systems, which are maintained according to vendor requirements. To safeguard these devices, the Specialist ensures they are strategically placed behind firewalls or remain air-gapped, optimizing security while maintaining operational integrity.

This position is in Fort Collins, Colorado, and is expected to be on-site during regular business hours.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or a related field PLUS a minimum of 1 year of professional IT support experience

OR Associate degree (AS/ AAS ) PLUS 3 years of professional IT support experience

OR High School Diploma (or GED ) PLUS 5 years of professional IT support experience.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Linux system administration, including supporting workstations, and shell scripting.

  • Exceptional critical thinking, problem-solving, and hardware/software troubleshooting skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical information concisely to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and vendors.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • IT-related certifications, i.e., CompTIA Network+/Security+/Linux+.

  • Comprehensive understanding of security principles and practices, including system hardening, vulnerability assessments, and compliance with security standards.

  • Experience with Windows networking, Active Directory, PowerShell, and Group Policy.

  • Experience supporting Microsoft products, encompassing an understanding of using the Microsoft 365 suite with applications such as SharePoint, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Experience using a deployment/patch management system such as Microsoft Configuration Manager.

  • Maintain an organized and detailed inventory and service history of instrumentation workstations.

  • Consult on the selection and procurement of hardware and software.

  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with OVPR staff.

  • Work collaboratively within Research IT to provide exceptional customer service and rapport throughout OVPR and campus.
