Description of Work Unit
The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University is a large academic and research department in the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. We currently have twenty faculty members, eighty graduate students, over seventy full-time researchers and postdoctoral fellows, and outstanding and dedicated support staff.
Professor Christine Chiu’s research group, in the Department of Atmospheric Science, at Colorado State University ( CSU ) is pursuing research activities related to 1) the development of advanced retrieval methods for clouds, precipitation and aerosols, using a combination of radar, lidar, and radiometer from both surface- and space-based platforms; 2) three-dimensional radiative transfer and 3) cloud-aerosol-radiation interactions.
This position is funded by Department of Energy for developing an innovative, synergistic retrieval method for cloud and precipitation, aiming to advance our process-level understanding of cloud microphysics and precipitation formation. The work is based on an iterative Ensemble approach, but may expand to neural networks, machine learning or similar techniques.
This position will report to Professor Christine Chiu.
Required Job Qualifications
•Ph.D. degree in atmospheric science, physics, meteorology, or closely related field
•Research experience in cloud and precipitation remote sensing, including active and/or passive sensors
•Experience working with radiative transfer
Preferred Job Qualifications
•Some experience in studying boundary layer clouds or mixed phase clouds
•Some knowledge in retrieval theory
•Some experience with Neural Networks or Machine Learning
•Experience working with radiative transfer in shortwave and microwave spectral regions
Reflecting departmental and institutional values, candidates are expected to have the ability to advance the Department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Job Duty Category Research
•Extend existing synergistic retrieval methods for cloud and precipitation, such as drizzle, pristine ice, snow aggregates and rimed particles
•Perform research for understanding cloud processes, with focuses that can be drizzle initiation and formation in marine boundary layer clouds, or secondary ice productions and riming in mixed phase clouds
•Work as part of a team to deliver products to operational processing systems in a timely manner
