Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU . CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and other CSU departments to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

Up to eight Natural Resource Specialist positions are available with Colorado State University’s Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CSU CEMML ) and will be hired at different times throughout the next year. These positions are located at CSU’s main campus in Fort Collins, Colorado, and will be 100% in-person. These positions will provide natural resources planning support and essential document development and review on a growing team of specialists in ecology, biology, environmental compliance, climate change, and environmental planning and compliance document production.
The Natural Resource Specialists (hereafter Specialists) will provide subject matter expertise in one of the following disciplines or subject areas; wildlife, botany, hydrology, entomology, outdoor outreach and environmental education, National Environmental Policy Act ( NEPA ), climate change, or natural resources planning and compliance to meet military mission requirements. The Specialists will provide technical expertise for the development and review of regulatory compliance documents, including Integrated Natural Resources Management Plans (INRMPs), climate change assessments, NEPA analyses, wetland reports, biological assessments, fieldwork reports, and other natural resources-related documents.
A main component of this position is to collaborate with Department of Defense natural resource managers and CEMML Specialists to review the goals, objectives, and projects in INRMPs and develop recommendations that are both scientifically sound and guided by a regulatory or mission driver. Therefore, an understanding of natural resource management on public or federal lands is required. An additional focus will be to review and develop text for climate change reports and integrate relevant information into INRMPs. As such, excellent scientific synthesis, writing, and communication skills are required. The Specialist also will review and evaluate regulation-reporting documents and natural resources studies and surveys and will assist with all facets of document production (e.g., writing, editing, formatting).

Required Job Qualifications
PhD in Environmental Policy, Ecology, Biology, or a different natural resources-related field OR a M.A./M.S. in one of those fields plus at least two years of professional experience.
Experience preparing or reviewing compliance documents (e.g., Sikes Act, Clean Water Act, NEPA , Endangered Species Act).
Experience preparing natural resources planning documents (e.g., resource or land management plans).
Expertise in at least one of the following subject matter areas
outdoor outreach and environmental education
natural resources planning and compliance to meet military mission requirements.
Experience developing planning goals, objectives, and projects and/or reviewing goals, objectives and projects and developing recommendations for refinement.
Experience summarizing scientific information for clients and/or the public.
Excellent writing and editing skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Proficiency with ArcGIS.
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
At least two years of experience with natural resource management on military lands.
Knowledge of natural resource-related Department of Defense Instructions and Manuals (e.g., DoDI and DoDM 4715.03) and service-specific manuals, instructions, and/or orders.
Professional experience developing and updating land or resource management plans.
Expertise in one or more specific components of natural resource management on military lands (e.g., fish and wildlife management, wetland protection, forest management, invasive species management, habitat management, integrated pest management, biosecurity, coastal zone and marine resources management, conservation law enforcement)
Professional experience reviewing climate change models and assessments and developing adaptive strategies for mitigating the impacts of climate change.
Knowledge of vulnerability and adaptation concepts utilized in the engineering, disaster research, and/or socio-ecological systems research fields.
