Description of Work Unit

International Student and Scholar Services ( ISSS ) is part of the Office of International Programs ( OIP ) at Colorado State University and fosters the education and development of over 2,000 international students, scholars, and faculty from over 100 countries, to enable them to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals. ISSS staff provide advice, counseling, and advocacy on immigration, cultural, financial, academic, and personal concerns, and make appropriate referrals when necessary. Immigration services include immigration documentation and advising to nonimmigrant visa-bearers at Colorado State University, as well as permanent residency processing for individuals in positions of permanent employment with the University. ISSS supports a campus environment conducive to international education and intercultural awareness via educational, social, and cross-cultural programs for students, faculty, staff, and the community.

PLACE (Programs for Learning Academic and Community English) provides quality English language instruction and training in a safe and friendly academic environment. PLACE is a unit within the Office of International Programs and is comprised of three main activities: the Intensive English Program ( IEP ), Bridge Programs, and Customized Group Programs.

Position Summary

The ISSS Programming Coordinator plays a pivotal role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for international students and scholars. The position is responsible for developing, overseeing, and delivering a variety of engaging programs and activities tailored specifically to CSU’s international population, including PLACE English language learners. The Programming Coordinator aims to enhance the academic, cultural, and social experiences of international students and scholars, fostering a sense of belonging and promoting their integration into the campus and greater community to increase student satisfaction and retention. Programs the position manages include transition programs, social and cultural events, community-building events, and academic programs. The Programming Coordinator is responsible for leadership development of student staff, and serves as a member of the ISSS team to ensure programs are aligned with unit, division, and University missions and goals. This is a full-time administrative professional position reporting to the Assistant Director for Programming in ISSS .

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience designing and implementing programs, preferably for international students attending a university or college

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with a wide range of people at all levels of an organization, including culturally diverse communities

  • Evidence of strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize

  • Willingness and ability to frequently work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as program needs require

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; International Programs cannot sponsor a visa for this position.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equal access

  • One year of experience supervising students, professional staff or volunteers

  • Experience collaborating on programs with multiple stakeholders

  • Experience working in International Student and Scholar Services in a higher education setting

  • Experience managing social media accounts and content

  • Demonstrated knowledge of intercultural dynamics affecting international students and scholars, including knowledge of student development and intercultural theory

  • Experience working with English language learners

  • Experience presenting to audiences or leading workshops

  • Experience living, studying, or working across cultures or within an international setting

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, international education, higher education administration, intercultural communication or a related field

Duty/Responsibility

  • Develop and manage programs for international students and scholars, including transition programs such as orientation, intercultural programs such as the World Unity Fair, and community-building programs such as the Friday Afternoon Club.

  • Develop and manage programs to build community, foster intercultural education, and promote student retention and success.

  • Lead the Cultural Mentor Program, each year evaluating and refining the program, as well as providing mentorship and development opportunities for student leaders.

  • Research and lead program development using innovative best practices and trends in programming for international populations.

  • Supervise and train orientation peer leaders and program volunteers.

  • Develop engagement strategies to enhance the student/scholar experience at events and programs.

  • Provide training regarding intercultural communication, cultural interactions, culture-specific and intercultural awareness and sensitivity to a variety of campus and community audiences.

  • Communicate with students, academic departments, campus offices, and overseas partners to ensure effective and timely service delivery.

  • Lead evaluation of all ISSS programs and assist with assessment of select programs.

  • Manage and participate in programs during evening and weekend hours.

  • Track program expenses.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement programming communications, including weekly newsletter, social media accounts, Campus Community platform, website, and others.

  • Supervise student social media coordinator position.

  • Serve as advisor to Council of International Affairs ( COISA ) student organization, and work with COISA on outreach to other campus international student organizations.

  • Serve as a liaison between key CSU departments, students, and the local community on programs such as orientation, transition programs, housing, etc.

  • Initiate contact and develop campus partnerships, relationships, and collaborations with other units and campus offices to facilitate and enhance delivery of programs.

  • Represent the University, as appropriate, at conferences, symposia, and working groups devoted to international student and scholar issues.
