Description of Work Unit

Housed under the CSU Climate Initiative, the Spur Climate Hub at Colorado State University’s Denver-based Spur Campus is a pioneering initiative designed to address the multifaceted challenges of climate change. This hub aims to leverage CSU’s extensive expertise as a leading land-grant university renowned for its world-class climate-related knowledge, innovative education and training programs, and robust track record of climate innovation. The Spur Climate Hub is committed to serving a wide range of public, private, and philanthropic partners. It offers highly tailored climate information and programming, designed to meet the diverse needs of stakeholders including startup companies, large corporations, state and local agencies, community organizations, municipalities, philanthropies, and non-profit organizations. The Hub’s goal is to provide these partners with the tools and knowledge they need to effectively address climate change within Colorado and surrounding states. Central to the Hub’s mission is the integration and collaboration of faculty, staff, subject matter experts, and students from multiple CSU colleges, departments, and climate-related centers, institutes, and initiatives. This diverse team works together to support the development and implementation of innovative climate solutions.

CSU Spur acts as the educational anchor within the National Western Center destination. CSU Spur is a non-degree granting campus focused on bringing experiential education to the public in its three buildings: Vida and Terra, and Hydro. CSU Spur focuses on research and innovation and puts everything “on-display” to inspire the next generation to learn about food, water, and health, and consider career pathways in those fields.

The CSU Climate Initiative is housed at the CSU Fort Collins campus in the President’s Office. The CSU Climate Initiative coordinates CSU’s extensive expertise and assets to address the grand challenge of building a climate-resilient future in Colorado and beyond through knowledge generation, innovation, urban and rural community-based partnerships, and the education of a new generation of climate leaders.

Position Summary

Colorado State University seeks a full-time Director to lead a new system-wide Climate Hub at the CSU’s Denver-based Spur Campus. The director will be responsible for working with internal organizers to refine the initial offerings and secure buy-in for a holistic vision for the hub. The director will lead the development and execution of a five-year plan to support the diverse needs of wide range of public, private, and philanthropic partners in need of highly tailored climate information and programming that leverages CSU’s extensive expertise as a leading land-grant university with world-class climate-related knowledge, education/training programs, and track record of innovation.

Reporting to the Director of the CSU Climate Initiative, the Climate Hub Director will be responsible for recruiting and integrating faculty and staff subject matter experts and students across multiple CSU colleges, departments and several climate-related centers, institutes, and initiatives into Climate Hub programming. This diverse team will support startup companies, large corporations, state and local agencies, community organizations, municipalities, philanthropies, and non-profit organizations in addressing climate change across Colorado. This position is hybrid working primarily at CSU Spur and with travel to Fort Collins CSU campus when needed, as often as a couple of times per month.

The Director will be responsible for developing and growing external partnerships, revenue streams, services, education/training programs, and contracting mechanisms that position the hub to achieve both financial self-sustainability and regional impact within 5 and 10 years, respectively.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD and at least 2 years of relevant work experience; or, Master’s degree, MBA , or equivalent and at least 5 years of relevant work experience.

  • At least 5 years of public and/or private sector experience related to climate change (e.g., carbon finance, government and/or philanthropic programs, climate-related research, climate policy, corporate sustainability, acceleration of startup across food, energy, and water sectors)

  • 2 years of team management experience (2 employees or more).

  • Proven experience in fundraising and donor relationships.

  • Excellent written communication skills.

  • Expertise in climate change policy, analysis, or technical assistance.

  • Regularly report on progress, outcomes, and areas for improvement to the Director of the CSU Climate Initiative and Spur leadership

  • Implement feedback mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement and stakeholder satisfaction.
