Description of Work Unit

The Department of Political Science at Colorado State University provides quality undergraduate and graduate educational programs leading to the B.A., M.A. and PhD degrees. Our curriculum covers the breadth of the Political Science discipline including American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, and public policy and administration. The Department has a unique specialization in environmental politics and policy, which is reflected in the undergraduate and graduate curricula as well as faculty research and outreach. The Department serves 500 majors and minors along with more than 40 graduate students and houses the Straayer Center for Public Service Leadership. Approximately one-third of the undergraduate majors are first-generation college students. Our 22 tenure-track faculty conduct research to advance knowledge about government and politics and to identify solutions to societal problems in the United States and around the world. Faculty members are actively involved with interdisciplinary programs at CSU , including the School of Global Environmental Sustainability; the Center for Women’s Studies & Gender Research; the Center for Public Deliberation; the Center for Environmental Justice; the Political Economy Graduate Interdisciplinary Program; the One Health Institute; the Partnership for Air Quality, Climate and Health; the Institute for Research in the Social Sciences; and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Minor.

Colorado State University, with an enrollment of about 30,000, is a public, land-grant institution classified as RI (highest research activity) in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Position Summary

The Department of Political Science at Colorado State University invites applications for an entry-level tenure-track Assistant Professor position in American politics with a specialization in political communication. We are open with respect to theoretical orientation, substantive focus, and methodological approaches, and encourage applicants with a broad array of expertise in political communication in the US to apply.

The Department values both strong teaching and research. Successful candidates will be expected to offer courses in the American politics curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including an upper-division undergraduate course in political communication. Additional teaching assignments will depend on the candidate’s interests and expertise as well as departmental needs. The normal teaching load is 2-2.

Faculty members are also expected to advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students; demonstrate an active research agenda; and provide service to the department, college, university, and community.

Approximately one-third of undergraduate political science majors at CSU are first-generation college students. The Department offers programs of study leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The doctoral degree emphasizes the study of environmental politics and policy.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Primary teaching and/or scholarly emphasis in American Politics

  • Evidence of an active research agenda focused on political communication in the US

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness including the capacity to teach an upper division undergraduate course on political communication in the US

  • PhD in Political Science or related field by August 16, 2025

  • Ability to enhance the Department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion reflecting Departmental and institutional values
