Description of Work

This posting is for an Engineering Technician II in the Division 9 Forsyth County Maintenance Unit. This position will be responsible for technical support to the Forsyth County Maintenance Department. This position will assist in the inspection of commercial driveway permits, right-of-way utility encroachments, erosion control, traffic control devices, and roadway construction. This position may also be required to inspect contractor performance including guardrail repairs, long arm mowing and roadside mowing. This position performs routine inspection on a variety of projects to ensure general compliance with plans and specifications and submits required records, reports & diaries within specified time frames. Employee will be subject to both inside and outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Employee must obtain and keep current QMS Asphalt & Concrete Testing Certifications, Roadway Density Certifications, and Erosion Control Certificates Levels II & III. Position is exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.

  • Experience independently conducting inspections for compliance with contract agreements and specifications.

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

  • A working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in highway maintenance.

  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, software and basic mathematics.

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking, and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language.

Safety toe shoes required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
