Position Summary

Responsible for the management and administration of the Human Resources employee support services related to benefits and payroll. The leader within this function will define the strategy for both functional areas in association with the VP, Total Rewards, Employee Experience & Chief DEI+B Officer and the SVP, CHRO. In addition, the Director in this function will partner with other functional areas of the Human Resources, Shared Services at SJI along with all entities within the organization. This leader is the strategic lead for implementation, management and delivery of our benefits and payroll operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead, develop and enhance full-life-cycle alignment of benefits and payroll best practices to align with growth in the organization.

  • Lead efforts (where applicable) to automate and drive effective change management within functional area.

  • Develop and lead process improvement efforts to ensure continuous innovation is prioritized.

  • Strategically Lead Retirement, Leave Of Absence, ADA and other applicable alignments within the benefits department.

  • Lead Payroll team’s efforts in full-life cycle of payroll processes including reporting, W4/W2 Compliance, manage 401k and other related functional.

  • Apply technical experience to help solve, inform, and influence HR tools operate and support decision making across the organization.

  • Build a high performing team by both developing, attracting, and engaging existing and new team members to ensure a OneSJI approach.

  • Oversee HR Benefits and Payroll reporting by working closely with the IT/HR Technology dept and other functional areas of HR to ensure metrics are aligned.

  • Manage structural policy matters as it pertains to benefits and payroll practices and applicable laws with partnership of the Employee Relations – Policy team. As well as oversee management of data integrity in systems by regular audits for designated departments.

  • Ensure all HR-related systems stays in sync with data protection laws in collaboration with IT/HR Technology & Operations. In addition to lead Change Management efforts in relation to system and analytical development, integration, process improvements and/or management of opportunity alignment within function.

  • Provide clear and defined plans of improvement and implementation of opportunity areas within function. This will be done along enhancing commitment to career development, team development and best practice implementation within Benefits and Payroll functions.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 5+ years leading teams of Benefits and Payroll Professionals

  • Experience working and/or support a Total Rewards and Compensation Related practices a plus

  • High attention to detail with a focus on growth mindset of developing improvements across functional area.

  • Knowledge of Workforce Labor laws and Payroll Practices across multi-state in relation to benefits/payroll administration in accordance with federal, state and local municipality legislation.

  • Experience managing and supporting ERP systems such as Workday, SAP, Peoplesoft, MS Great Plains, HCM, reporting, security, ADP, Kronos, HR Service Center and additional technology as implemented.

  • Ability to build collaborative, trustworthy relationships across SJI functions

  • Strategic, enterprise-wide and systems experience with implementation and leadership.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical solutions in a simple manner that can be understood broadly within the organization

  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation, communication (written and verbal), and consulting skills. Ability to assess needs, influence, collaborate, deliver and partner at the most senior levels in the organization

  • Highly Proficient at project and change management methodologies to ensure alignment along the way; co-creating change on an enterprise level

  • Ability to interact and align strategy with Senior Leaders of SJI, while provide clear roadmaps of deliverables to our 5+ year model.

Qualifications

Required Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 11 years of relevant experience leading Benefits, Payroll or transferable experience in Human Resources or;

  • Master’s degree with 8 years of relevant experience.

Compensation Range:

$140,000 - 210,000

We are committed to pay transparency and ensuring equitability compensation for all employees. The pay range for this position reflects the base salary only and does not include benefits, bonuses, or other forms of compensation that might be part of the total compensation package. The specific salary offered will be based on a candidate’s qualifications, education, and experience.
