About the Department/College

This position will reside in the Philosophy Department, which is housed within the College of Arts and Letters. The Philosophy Department has 10 full-time faculty members. It houses two majors: the traditional Philosophy major and Philosophy, Politics, and Law (an interdisciplinary major that focuses on preparation for law school). In addition to supporting its majors, the Philosophy Department provides seats for Liberal/General Studies and several of its classes feature in degree programs across NAU\'s campus.

About the Position

. The successful candidate will support existing programming at the university and in the community with the Institute for Public and Professional Ethics in Leadership. Successful candidate will teach three courses per semester. For one course (Fieldwork Experience), faculty member will serve as the Coach to an inaugural collegiate Ethics Bowl team at NAU, mentor regional High School Ethics Bowl teams with the help of select NAU students, and assist in the hosting of the annual Arizona High School Ethics Bowl in January 2025.

This posting is for hiring 1 full-time, 9-month position for the 2024/2025 academic year ONLY. Contract begins August 2024

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teach 3 classes per semester for the Philosophy Department
    • PHI 408 \"Fieldwork Experience\" in which they will train select NAU students to serve as mentors for the High School Ethics Bowl, visit local schools, and help run the Ethics Bowl in January.
    • Two sections of PHI 332 \"Healthcare Ethics\" in FA24, and
    • Two sections of PHI 105 \"Introduction to Ethics\" in SP25

Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidate holds a PhD or is ABD (degree is conferred on or before the start date of August 19, 2024) in Philosophy or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AOS or AOC in Ethics or Applied Ethics (esp. Healthcare ethics or similar)
  • Prior experience or evidence of potential in o treach or public philosophy
  • Prior experience or evidence of potential in teaching
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills (to manage Fieldwork and ethics bowl)

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to serve as the Coach to NAU\'s collegiate Ethics Bowl team,
  • Ability to mentor regional High School Ethics Bowl teams
  • Ability to teach \"Introduction to Ethics\" and \"Healthcare Ethics\"

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range begins at \$60,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate\'s qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position.
