About the Department/College

The Department of Educational Specialties (ESP) is part of the College of Education (COE) and offers undergraduate and graduate programs in special education, career and technical education, bilingual and multicultural education, and educational technology. The ESP Department prepares educators for excellence in teaching with diverse student populations in diverse learning environments while being aligned with the strategic priorities of NAU to elevate excellence for a bold and boundless future. We are committed to serving the people of Arizona, including Indigenous and Latine communities; and are dedicated to preparing individuals who contribute to the academic preparedness, positive educational outcomes, school climate, and college-going and completion rates in Arizona and beyond. The Bilingual Multicultural Education program spans courses leading to the SEI, ESL, and Bilingual endorsements MED program in Education. Courses in the Bilingual Multicultural Education area are offered in hybrid modalities with students enrolling across the state and beyond.

About the Position

The ESP Department seeks a new colleague for the position of Assistant Teaching Professor or Lecturer within the ESL and Bilingual Multicultural Education area beginning in August 2024. The position is for a 4/4 teaching load with a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses and is eligible for annual renewal. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to equity and justice in education and excellence in teaching university students historically minoritized within education systems.

We invite applications to contribute to the Department of Educational Specialties graduate programs through teaching and scholarship on the preparation of teachers who use lingui tically and culturally sustaining approaches. The successful candidate will have enthusiasm for teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level and expertise in ESL and Bilingual education, with a special focus on diversity applied to one or more of the following areas: applied linguistics, ESL methods, or assessment of minority learners.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate Bilingual Multicultural Education courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and online modalities. Support the educational goals and learning needs of students historically minoritized by education systems (for example, Students of Color such as Latinx/e and Indigenous students, linguistically diverse students, first-generation college students, students with dis/abilities, etc.).
  • Collaborate with Bilingual Multicultural Education colleagues to design course/program curricula through a lens of equity and justice.
  • Contribute to service on department, college, and university committees.
  • Advise graduate students in the ESL and Bilingual Education master\'s program.
