The Financial Counselor provides guidance to patients that have outstanding balances. A Financial Counselor handles many faucets such as Charge Entry, Customer Service, Follow-Up with both Patient and Insurance Inquiries; Payments and Refunds; Payment Plans; Financial Hardships and Collections. Representatives are placed in many locations within the practice offering help to patients in a face-to-face setting. Special Projects and Reports are also handled by this team.

This position is full-time, Monday - Friday. Employees are required to have flexibility to work any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm EST. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime. Our office is located at 60 Meritt Blvd., Fishkill, NY 12524.

We offer 4 weeks of on-the-job training. The hours of training will be during our normal business hours/needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understands and implements the collection process for accounts which are in arrears; reviews account balances, identifies and takes action on accounts following established procedures

  • Contacts patients regarding overdue balances via telephone or letter; explains financial obligations and works to arrange timely payment; makes time payment agreements with patients as indicated and monitors those agreements routinely; explains consequences of non-payment

  • Maintains appropriate documentation of all collection activities pertaining to patient accounts, correspondence and insurance reimbursement

  • Handle patient complaint and escalate unresolved patient complaints to Team Lead

  • Receives payments from patients

  • Prepares requests for refunds of overpayment by supplying all necessary documentation in writing

  • Reviews all upcoming patient appointments regarding back balances. Resolves any errors prior to patient appointment if necessary (this could include phone call in advance or flagging patient account to discuss upon patient arrival)

  • When necessary, telephones insurance companies for status of unpaid claims for account resolution

  • Assists patients who need explanation of their accounts; works with patients to arrive at mutually suitable payment arrangements

  • Confirm eligibility and coverage conditions on patient insurance when indicated

  • Attends staff meetings

  • Performs other tasks as required for the effective and efficient functioning of the Practice when directed to do so by Supervisory and Managerial personnel

  • Provides outstanding customer service to all patients

  • May be required to travel to different locations to assist in coverage as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED OR equivalent work experience

  • Must be 18 years of age OR older

  • 1+ years of healthcare customer experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Word (create correspondence and work within templates), Microsoft Excel (data entry, sort / filter, and work within tables) and Microsoft Outlook (email and calendar management)

  • Ability to work onsite at 60 Merritt Blvd., Fishkill, NY 12524

  • Ability to work Monday - Friday, in any of our 8-hour shift schedules during our normal business hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm EST, including the flexibility to work occasional overtime, based on the business need

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Healthcare and / or insurance billing or processing experience

  • Previous revenue cycle experience

  • Previous Call Center experience

New York Residents Only: The hourly range for this role is $16.54 to $32.55 per hour. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
