Public Utility District No 1 of Whatcom County Water System Operator in Ferndale, Washington

WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR This full-time position reports to a Chief Water Operator and is located at the PUD's main operations center, 1705 Trigg Road, Ferndale, WA.  The shift hours are 6:00am to 4:00pm.

WHAT THIS JOB DOES: This position works independently or as part of a crew to operate the water treatment plants and well systems to assure compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and standards; perform water quality testing and various lab tests; operate a variety of treatment plant and testing equipment; prepare and maintain a variety of records and logs; clean clear-wells, settling basins, contact basins, and media filters; conduct periodic inspections of the water plant to assure proper operation of electronic and mechanical equipment. Operates SCADA to monitor and control water system facilities. Performs on call/standby duty for remote alarm contact and access, and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have excellent communication skills, the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, communicate clear and concise verbal instructions and information in English to coworkers, customers and the public. Must be a physically able and mechanically inclined individual.  Must have working knowledge of operating and control of electric motors, pumps and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treatment plants.  A strong background in mechanical abilities is preferred.

High school diploma or equivalent and twelve (12) months related experience and/or training in the operation of water and/or wastewater systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  

Training and/or experience in addition to water operations related to the maintenance and repair of low voltage electrical or mechanical systems will also be considered in evaluating applications.   Candidate must have a valid Washington State driver's license; Possess or have ability to obtain within one (1) year minimum of Washington State Certification for Water Treatment Plant Operator -- In Training; and possess or have ability to obtain within (1) month of employment, a Federal Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC). This is a Represented Position, General Teamsters Union Local 231.  Starting base hourly rate of pay: $31.64 including excellent benefits.
