Employees within Juvenile Justice and Youth Services have an opportunity to see the impacts their professionalism and service can do for the well-being of youth in their transition into adulthood. The Department of Health and Human Services is dedicated to provide care for individuals and families in Utah. Utah Division of Juvenile Justice and Youth Services (JJYS) provides a continuum of intervention,supervision and rehabilitation programs to youth offenders while assuring public safety.   Principal Duties

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of Juvenile Justice Services Youth Development Associates,Youth Development Specialists and Technicians in providing counseling and treatment services for severely behaviorally disordered youth.
  • Provide security,supervision and control of delinquent adolescents.
  • Provide directions to ensure that adequate standards of conduct,health,safety,housekeeping and recreation are maintained.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel including: hiring,determining workload and delegating assignments,training,monitoring and evaluating performance,and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions.
  • Oversee the schedule of the unit,approve staff time off,and approve timesheets. 
  • Writes or drafts correspondence,reports,documents and/or other written materials.
  • Use non-violent crisis intervention techniques.
  • Lead the work of others by monitoring,reviewing,training and delegating.
  • Adhere to standards of care and supervision for traumatized youth.
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly,and concisely,in writing; read and understand information presented in writing.
  • Speak clearly,concisely and effectively; listen to,and understand,information and ideas as presented verbally.

The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate has eight years of full-time experience in working with troubled youth or a combination of education in a related field and work experience with troubled youth that equals eight years. Supplemental Information

  • May be required to provide 24 hour on call services.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations,e.g. working at great heights,working in extreme outdoor weather conditions,being subject to possible physical attack,etc.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend,crouch,stoop,stretch,reach,lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • DHRM rules apply for promotions/transfers.
