The Univesity of Maine at Farmington (UMF) (https://www.umf.maine.edu/) is excited to announce a job opportunity for a Mental Health Counselor. The Mental Health Counselor provides individual and group counseling to students to help them navigate challenges impacting their academic, social, career, and personal goals. This position will also provide after-hours crisis consultation to Residence Life staff and mental health consultation to UMF students, staff, and faculty. Topics commonly addressed include relationship issues, life decisions, motivation, personal growth, adjustment to college, anxiety, depression, grief, alcohol and substance abuse, sexuality, trauma/abuse, identity, and lifestyle choices. Counselors actively engage in outreach initiatives, delivering training sessions, and prevention activities. The start date for this position is August 15, 2024.

This is a full-time (40-hour work week), 9-month position with pay distributed across twelve (12) months. A typical work year is August 15th through May 15th.

Essential Duties

  • Provides individual appointments with students for counseling, which includes covering emergencies and/or walk-in times on a rotational basis.

  • Provides after hours/weekend consultation on a rotational basis.

  • Provides mental health related training on campus, including student hall staff training.

  • Documents and provides complete, timely records of clinical activities.

  • Engages in consultation and care management with local mental health agencies and treatment programs.

  • Serves as a member of the UMF coordinating team.

  • Participates in community events and programming to build connections with local agencies.

  • Participates in departmental outreach activities.

  • Provides tailored individual mental health counseling to students.

  • Provides consultation to faculty and staff.

  • Serves as a member of the interprofessional team working to create and sustain a fully inclusive community, resulting in student success at the University of Maine at Farmington.

    Qualifications:

    Required Competencies

  • Empathy and Compassion - The ability to understand and share the feelings of clients, creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment.

  • Communication Skills - Clear and effective communication is essential for building rapport, explaining therapeutic concepts, and facilitating understanding between counselor and client. Skill in listening attentively to clients, understanding their concerns, and providing appropriate responses .

  • Cultural Competence - Awareness and sensitivity to different racial and cultural backgrounds including understanding how cultural backgrounds may influence mental health beliefs and behaviors.

  • Assessment, Treatment Planning, and Implementation - Ability to assess mental health concerns, develop personalized treatment plans, and effectively implement therapeutic interventions.

  • Crisis Intervention - Skill in managing and de-escalating crisis situations, including suicidal ideation or acute mental health crises.

  • Ethical and Legal Knowledge - Understanding of ethical guidelines and legal requirements governing the practice of mental health counseling, including confidentiality and boundaries.

    Required Qualifications

  • Behavioral/Mental Health licensure in the State of Maine - LCSW, LMSW-c, LCPC, LCPC-c.

  • Prior clinical counseling experience with adolescents and/or adults.

  • Experience with both in-person and telehealth counseling.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience counseling in a university/college setting.

  • Experience with Medicat Electronic Health Record.

  • Independent licensure in the State of Maine (LCSW, LCPC, LMFT).
