Summary This position will operate within the Veterans Transportation Service (VTS) program at the San Francisco VA Health Care System, in the Business Office, in order to provide transportation to veterans and their spouses who live in rural areas of the San Francisco VA Health Care System and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas. Responsibilities This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until June 28, 2024 The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be March 08, 2024, with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.; Tour of duty subject to change to meet the needs of the Agency Position Description Title/PD#: Motor Vehicle Operator/PD02587-A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized Duties for the position include but are not limited to: Provides non-emergent, safe transportation of eligible Veterans and cargo from one location to another such as from clinic to a hospital over predetermined routes and arrives and departs from pick up and discharge points at scheduled times; ensures passengers, materials and equipment are properly located and secured and protected from weather and that the vehicle is not loaded beyond capacity. Operates passenger vehicles to transport passengers over public roads at highway speeds. Vehicles are driven in urban and rural areas on Federal, state and county roads and city streets in all traffic conditions. Operates and provides preventive maintenance for patient transport vehicles. Ensures that passenger safety rules and regulations are followed. Incumbent is the first contact with the veterans and is responsible for making the first positive impression. Incumbent interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day. Incumbent is responsible for providing the VTS program office a list of veterans who arrived at the San Francisco VA Health Care System via the VTS transportation van. Incumbent is responsible to insure only eligible veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center or satellite clinic and returned to their respective pick-up locations. Complete trip tickets and preventive maintenance records. Driver is required to maintain a current Basic Life Support Card. Employee demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients being served. Will be required to attend job-related skills and training as coordinated through the Veterans Transportation Service program. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. Working Conditions: Employee works mostly outside, is exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts and bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Employee will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
