Department Summary
The Geography Department is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in various types of geographic study. The Department of Geography has 27 Faculty, 125+ undergraduate majors, and 40+ graduate students.
Research and graduate education in the Department of Geography focuses on the following subfields: (a) Geographic information science: cartography, GIS, data analysis and visualization, spatial analysis and modeling; (b) Human geography: political-ethnic, cultural, human-environment relations, and behavioral geography; (c) Physical geography: Quaternary studies, biogeography, climatology and climatic change, geomorphology; (d) Environmental studies: forest and ecosystem issues, river and watershed issues, biodiversity and global environmental change, policy and law, environmental applications of GIS; and (e) Geographic education.
Position Summary
The Postdoctoral Scholar for Geography is part of a project investigating the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet’s outlet glaciers over the industrial era, with a focus on their response to early 20th century warming. This position will run experiments with an ice sheet model, including simulations of the ice sheet as a whole and case studies on individual outlet glaciers, and the role may also include analysis of existing climate and ice-sheet datasets to inform model experiments.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to the interpretation of results and dissemination via conferences and peer-reviewed publications, and contribute to a supportive research group, potentially including co-mentoring students on related projects. The Postdoctoral Scholar will participate in group discussions, engage with colleagues, and mentor students.
Minimum Requirements
• PhD in Earth Science, Physical Geography, or related field (required at the time of appointment).
Professional Competencies
• Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
• Past research experience in glaciology, climate dynamics, or polar science.
• Familiarity with numerical models or other computational methods.
• Experience publishing in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
