Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is the primary repository for the university’s institutional archives, rare books, historic photographs, and one of the largest historical manuscript collections in the Pacific Northwest. It is the largest repository in the state that provides extensive public access to its collections and is thus a critically important source of Oregon and Pacific Northwest materials to be used for research and instruction.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Special Collections and University Archivist (SCUA) & Reference Services Coordinator, the Instruction and Outreach Archivist serves as a member of both the public services team and the curatorial team in SCUA, with responsibilities in outreach, reference, instruction, social media, and assessment. The Archivist will develop, lead, or collaborate on outreach activities on campus and in the community to support returning visitors and reach new audiences. The Archivist will manage SCUA’s Instructional Program, including scheduling the classroom; serving as the first point of contact for faculty interested in teaching; supporting faculty in identifying and selecting appropriate resources for classroom sessions; delivering instruction sessions and developing instructional content; and potential supervision of student employees. The Instruction and Outreach Archivist will also be responsible for collaboration with the Assessment and Analytics Manager to evaluate outreach and instruction functions in alignment with the SAA/RBMS Standardized Statistical Measures and Metrics for Public Services. This position includes weekly shifts at public service points and assistance with in-person reference inquiries. The Instruction and Outreach Archivist also participates in professional development activities and organizations to stay current with trends and practices in the field and to meet criteria for promotion and retention. This position contributes to the University’s goals regarding equity and inclusion.

Minimum Requirements

• Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent; OR equivalent terminal degree in which coursework has focused on the intellectual control and organization of archival collections or primary source instruction.

• 4 years experience in an archives or special collections repository.

• 1 year of work experience with instruction and outreach in a special collections library or archives setting.

Professional Competencies

• Strong familiarity with information literacy, primary source literacy, and active learning pedagogy in an archives or special collections repository.

• Strong public service or customer service skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person and writing with a diverse campus constituency.

• Experience performing complex and detail-oriented tasks, especially those related to archival instruction and outreach.

• Ability to develop and complete plans and projects on time and with available resources.

• Experience using common office software, particularly Microsoft Excel or other databases, and using technology to support academic instruction in a hybrid learning environment.

• Experience or familiarity with ArchivesSpace and/or Integrated Library Systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively engage and network with archival colleagues through professional associations and conferences.

• Familiarity with archival or rare book principles and operations as related to the preservation and use of the artifact.

• Experience training and supervising student employees.

• Experience working with archival and rare book collections in a public service or cataloging setting.
