Department Summary

The Knight Campus Brewing Innovation Program and the Fermentation Innovation Lab provide immersive learning experiences in support of the Knight Campus’ efforts to advance innovation and impact. These programs and facilities help participants hone their innovation skills using brewing as an engaging educational platform. Participants learn how to define an innovation challenge, develop creative solutions to solve that challenge, prototype and evaluate those solutions, and use feedback to refine solutions or redefine the challenge in the context of brewing.

Position Summary

This position has primary responsibility for instruction within the Brewing Innovation Program and managing the day-to-day operation of the Fermentation Innovation Lab. This position will serve as instructor of record and as a collaborative instructor for courses in the Brewing Innovation minor. The minor aims to use brewing as a backdrop for experiential learning within the innovation process through a series of four interdisciplinary core courses. Lab management duties include lab oversight, project scheduling, ongoing development and upgrading of facilities, managing and training participants for compliance/safety, and overseeing the safe and sanitary operation of Fermentation Innovation Lab. The position will ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies regarding food processing, facility certification, and alcohol production. Experimentation and research will also be conducted to stay up to date in the field, engage with external partner scientists, and inform the curriculum. This position reports to Sr. Associate Vice President for Academics and Research.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications for the Rank of Instructor:

  • A master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Fermentation Science, or a related discipline. Typically, the rank of instructor requires a master's degree. However, we recognize the importance of professional experience for this role, and we welcome applications from candidates with a bachelor's degree and considerable relevant experience

  • Three years progressive experience in the brewing industry or as an active homebrewer

  • Experience training or instructing in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field or within a brewing/fermentation environment

  • Experience working in a laboratory or brewery setting

Minimum Qualifications for the Rank of Senior Instructor:

  • A Masters degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Fermentation Science, or a related discipline. Typically, the rank of instructor requires a master's degree. However, we recognize the importance of professional experience for this role, and we welcome applications from candidates with a bachelor's degree and considerable relevant experience

  • Six years of experience post-degree in related discipline

  • Three years progressive experience in the brewing industry or as an active homebrewer

  • Experience training or instructing in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field or within a brewing/fermentation environment

  • Experience working in a laboratory or brewery setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of experience as an instructor focused on experiential learning

  • Experience in curriculum development for undergraduate-level applied programs.

  • Experience overseeing or managing operations within a brewing facility or wet laboratory

  • Experience developing new recipes and/or brewing methods

  • Experience with common analytical methods associated with beer and brewing

  • Ability to teach sensory skills appropriate to the evaluation of beer and related fermented products
