Department Summary

University Communications drives the University of Oregon’s strategic goals through the development and implementation of comprehensive communications and marketing programs. The division manages media relations, digital communications, social media, creative design, writing, editing, strategic communications, licensing, and marketing strategy. It collaborates with departments across campus to tell the UO’s key stories, enhance its reputation, and support initiatives that showcase academic and research excellence while promoting student success.

Position Summary

The Assistant Vice President for Digital Strategy (AVP) serves as a dynamic and innovative leader for the University of Oregon's (UO) digital presence. The AVP will elevate the university’s digital presence to enhance engagement, strengthen the value of the brand, and support the division’s goal to be a leading marketing and communications organization. The AVP reports to the Vice President for University Communications and Chief Marketing Officer.

The AVP will develop and implement a coherent digital strategy leveraging the university’s digital platforms to position the university effectively and engage critical audiences. As a leader in digital thinking and technology, this executive will support and build a strong team to create, maintain, and evolve a distinct, forward-looking, best-in-class digital ecosystem. The AVP will anticipate and leverage key and emerging technologies to bring measurable value to the brand through a comprehensive digital strategy, enterprise approach, and content optimized for reach and consumption. Finally, the AVP will act as a key member of the leadership team, working with peers in News and Content, Marketing, Communications and Administration to work collaboratively in support of key goals.

Minimum Requirements

• 10 years of experience in digital strategy and leadership.

• 4 years experience managing a high-profile digital communications team.

Professional Competencies

• Strong Leadership and Team Management Skills: Ability to inspire, develop, and manage a highly talented team.

• Expertise in Digital Strategies and Best Practices: In-depth understanding of SEO/SEM, UX/UI, and digital technology roadmaps.

• Excellent Communication and Collaboration: Effective work with cross-functional teams while respecting diverse identities.

• Digital Literacy and Project Management: Proficiency in project-management tools and the current marketing and communications technology.

• Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

• Management and Strategy Execution: Ability to manage multiple units and external vendors to achieve strategic goals.

• Competency in Data and Metrics: Expertise in setting and evaluating data and metrics in communications effectiveness, especially in social media and virtual engagement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven Experience in Digital Strategy and Marketing: Successful track record of digital transformation initiatives in digital strategy and leadership.

• Professional experience working in communications in higher education, specifically at a 4-year university.

• Advanced degree in digital communications or related field.
