The University of Oregon’s Department of English invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Digital Rhetoric to begin on September 16, 2024. The successful candidate will have a PhD in English, Rhetoric, Communications, or a related interdisciplinary field. The new faculty member will join an energetic intellectual community with an established reputation in Rhetoric and Composition and emerging strengths in Digital Humanities.
Research agendas might include:
• Digital folklore and storytelling; social media; virality; conspiracy theories; digital poetics
• Intersections of Feminist, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, AAPI, disability, and/or queer and trans digital rhetorics, ethics, and justice
• Digital cultural rhetorics; participatory culture; political and/or activist discourse digital environments
• Rhetorics of data and information sciences; data visualization; rhetorics of technology; quantification; critical code studies; networked rhetorics; machine learning and algorithmic culture
• Embodied and cyborg rhetorics; posthuman and other-than-human rhetorics; AI rhetorics
• Digital pedagogies; information literacies; multimodal composition; new media writing and rhetoric
• Immersion, interaction, and play; ludology; digital games
The new specialist in Digital Rhetoric will help strengthen and expand the English Department’s core commitment to the teaching of writing, both in the English Department’s undergraduate degree programs, which include the interdisciplinary minor in Writing, Speaking, and Critical Reasoninghttps://wscr.uoregon.edu/, and the Composition Program’shttps://composition.uoregon.edu/leadership of writing across the curriculum through its introductory writing sequence. The candidate will teach undergraduate ENG classes at the lower and upper divisions; a list of ENG classes is available here, and classes could include ENG 200, 209, 250, 330, 335, 413, 420, 470, 486M, 491, 492, 493, and 494. The candidate will also teach graduate-level courses for the structured emphasis in Rhetoric and Composition, a core part of the English department’s Ph.D. curriculum, and will have the opportunity to contribute to the transdisciplinary graduate New Media and Culture Certificatehttps://newmediaculture.uoregon.edu/
We seek candidates who can build on UO’s excellence in digital humanities research methodologies and expand the study of twenty-first-century rhetorics on our campus.

Department or Program Summary
Our faculty work in close collaboration with Digital Scholarship Services (DSS)https://library.uoregon.edu/digital-scholarship-services. DSS is staffed by campus and national leaders in digital librarianship who have won grants from and helmed projects sponsored by the NEH, the IMLS, and the Mellon Foundation, among others. DSS also operates the DREAM (Digital Research, Education, Arts, and Media) Labhttps://blogs.uoregon.edu/dreamlab/about/, a physical space within Knight Library for faculty and graduate students to collaborate, host events, and build community around digital research methods and projects.
Recognizing that digital information literacies are increasingly vital to student success and career readiness, UO is promoting digital pedagogy across the curriculum. The English Department is home to an interdisciplinary minor in Digital Humanitieshttps://dh.uoregon.edu/, for which the new hire might teach and develop courses in new media, digital culture, and twenty-first-century rhetorics. In 2023, the School of Computer and Data Scienceshttps://scds.uoregon.edu/ will also launch a new emphasis domainhttps://datascience.uoregon.edu/domainsin Cultural Analytics, which allows students to leverage their data-driven skills in courses from several humanities departments.
Candidates can expect to teach 5 courses per year across three 11-week quarters; introductory, mid-level, and advanced undergraduate, as well as graduate-level seminars, with options to teach in summer courses. Expectations of teaching include mentorship of MA and Ph.D. students and directing undergraduate and graduate theses. We especially encourage applicants committed to coursework that encourages undergraduate inquiry and research, supports graduate research and professional development, and speaks to diverse student populations. The department has an established mentorship program and mentorship resources are also available from the Office of the Provost for faculty at all stages of their career.
